Fascinating, so how do they compensate for the platform moving relative to the drill site on everything right of the compliant tower? After they struck oil is all good, it's a pipe, but during drilling?

The drill is also a chain of pipes and it can move around a bit and still work.

The drillships have fancy pod thrusters and use GPS to hold the drill exactly above the hole. Before they had GPS, there was at least one case (project Mohole) where they anchored six buoys to the ocean floor in a circle around the drill location and had the ship hold its position by measuring the range to the buoys with sonar.

If you've got about $80 I have good news for you. I guess lead bricks are useful enough for shielding and construction that they seem to be pretty commonly sold in that form. I even found one site that has decent shipping rates with flat rate boxes, take that postal service

Shielding is the no 1. They also make good material to make really solid platforms if needed.

I've used them for shielding, if you want to take precise and accurate radiation readings it's helpful to block out background radiation. Particularly if you're working near other radiation sources.

I've also humped 50lb lead blankets for shielding for industrial radiography.

In a teaching lab they were used for shielding in radiation experiments. Some were used for studies of momentum and others was specific heat and thermal mass experiments. Any time you wanted to do something with a sense, heavy object. Being wrapped in paper probably helps with the health and safety aspect of handling lead.

Well, I hear hospital laundries are gross anyway, using 30C eco mommy cycles and such.

That's an autocorrect from "economy" and I'm leaving it.

E:^^^ Yeah, you don't have raw lead kicking around where people can handle it, even most bullets are copper plated, we encased our lead bricks in duct tape over plastic.

The physics department here has a synchrotron in the basement that I've been down to see a couple of times. They've got lead bricks like this all over the place to shield against radiation, the bricks are wrapped in some sort of clear plastic resin. But yeah its primary function is for health purposes as lead is toxic.

Now with less breakage.

I was about to link that, yeah. The Condeep platforms are by far the most impressive thing ever built in Norway - and Troll A remains the tallest structure to ever be moved.

(They tow it completely empty, and then lower it to the bottom by letting water into some parts of the structure, IIRC. You can still go down into the legs, though - somewhere on youtube there is a video of Katie Melua doing a concert down at ocean floor depth inside one leg.)

Ha, yeah.

I can't help but think it looks worryingly top-heavy for towing like that, even when I logically know how most of the structure is under water. Having that many towboats surrounding it in such a wide fan seems like a sensible precaution. :)

Shielding for Gamma Spectrometry. It's called a Lead Castle, you put the Radioisotope Source and the Gamma Spectrometer probe inside the lead castle to help limit other, natural sources from messing up your reading

In proptu shielding. You build igloo-like constructs on desks in the lab to shield specific parts in your experiment. It is really a hazard in itself, cause i have seen 300kg of lead stacked on a desk.
