I'm reasonably confident that I have posted this in this thread before but the recent episode of Top Gear America where they re-invent Global/World Rallycross reminded me of the greatest race of that series ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nay68V_mMEc McTinkerson fucked around with this message at 03:23 on Mar 8, 2021 |

So there's this guy right, runs a pretty big copart-buying, ebay-selling, ship-breaker style shop, and he's been doing these videos right? His highest video (outside of what I'm gonna post) has like 8.5k views. And then about a month back, he starts doing bought core engine breakdowns and post-mortems, of which he apparently does a couple hundred a year. Cue several hundred thousand views per vid over a month. Yeah they have the goofy "YELLOW YOUTUBE THUMBNAIL DESCRIPTION", but I get it. They're really good, great explanation, little fluff, no "character" he's trying to invent. I dunno if this has been posted since he started doing them, but I scanned back 5 pages and didn't see any of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjVxK2kbb0U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtoKplD-BUk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5QOSXkWDQM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQPGHKdVybY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLpTusy3c9M

I did a search and didn't see this guy's channel listed. I find it both educational and entertaining -- he buys cars a salvage auctions and rebuilds them. Good content, good humor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQua2LoaH-M

I like this guy but he constantly goes on about how people will say XYZ. Its sort of annoying, but he does a lot of pretty involved bodywork.

CAT INTERCEPTOR posted:IN THE BIN Moog is absolutely correct and it explains how I've been sat in some quick cars that were really quiet which makes them feel less quick than they actually are. There's something about getting absolutely bodied with soundwaves that just amplifies the effect. I'm very into the idea of retrofit electric kits for older cars but there are some I wouldn't do it to because the sound of the engine/exhaust is just so much a part of the experience of that car. The 3rd gen Civic I've got has been handed down the exhaust from a friend's which adds this adorable little burble on lift and every time I drove that car I'd smile because of that noise, it was intrinsically linked to the character of that car and getting rid of it for an electrical whir wouldn't be the same. Some people don't care and that's fine but I find the audio experience of a car to be very enjoyable hence me posting this video before saying it was probably the best sounding thing in the world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umO3iqac_4c Watch the video with the sound off for a simulation of it if it was electric. Not quite the same experience The audio experience for me being a part of it is why I think DSG gearboxes ruin the sound of cars too, yeah they're better in every way in terms of performance but I've never cared about that, the rise and fall of an engine's revs again add to the theatre of it all and removing it just dulls the experience. Olympic Mathlete posted:Watch the video with the sound off for a simulation of it if it was electric. Not quite the same experience I'm with you on the sound being a critical part of the experience for a lot of cars, but this is taking it too far. The motor in an EV may not make much noise itself, but there are still other parts of the drivetrain which will give you plenty of driving noises, especially in race cars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8vEEqcuZDs&t=48s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVkJjt_Peg0&t=297s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUwRnBhtevE Though you can certainly make one that has no significant "speed noises" beyond wind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvZMwiwnLVg&t=178s And at the other end of the spectrum there are things you can do with the switching frequency on the motor controller to control their sound. I don't know if it's been done on a production EV yet (I thought the Taycan did, but I can't find any confirmation) but it's definitely a thing with trains. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcLOYNa9f6E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=js_GbEPrsJs&t=83s wolrah fucked around with this message at 19:51 on Apr 12, 2021 |

If so According to Wikipedia at least, kinda? quote:While the 2.0 Ford EcoBoost engine and its later 2.3 variant share a cylinder block with the L3-VDT and are derived from the Mazda L architecture, little else is shared between the EcoBoost and L3-VDT and they should not be confused with one another. The EcoBoost engines have different turbochargers, Ford-designed heads, different direct injection systems along with featuring Ford's Ti-VCT variable valve timing system instead of Mazda's S-VT.

That timing cover is like the opposite of some Nissans... the top of the timing cover used the head gasket for sealing. Get a little sloppy reinstalling it and you're doing a head gasket job.
