Oh absolutely. I think we're in complete agreement.

Bail reform is definitely needed, but getting rid of cash bail altogether without mandating that violent offenses aren't eligible for bail is a recipe for disaster. Look at how many people who have warrants out for violent offenses, and go on to commit further violent crimes. That poo poo just discredits (in the public's eyes) the entire "end cash bail" movement, which in reality is meant to make sure poor people arrested for Nonviolent or petty offenses aren't sitting in jail for months or years.

Like defunding the police, ending cash bail isn't an immediately obvious phrase. A suspect should be kept in jail or released pending trial regardless of financial circumstances - ending cash bail doesn't mean a suspect can't be remanded. There's some historical logic around cash bail and it could potentially be reformed in a more equitable way, but in practice today it means poor people sit in jail for while other people go home for the same crimes. This also impacts how plea deals go down, since poor people are pressured to agree to something to get a chance to go home.

The issue is that when you end cash bail, you also have to mandate incarceration for violent offenses, and especially repeat violent offenders.

I would think that part would be obvious. Its not an argument against ending cash bail.

Dangerous offenders aren’t supposed to be eligible for cash bail. Prosecutors use the ability to set unreasonable bail amounts to be lazy and not have to actually show that someone is a danger.

I think there should be a massive judicial expansion, mostly under the argument that "justice deferred is justice denied."

Like. Imagine how crazy it would be if going to court wasn't massive cost and time calculation? It would kill off arbitration and also make it possible for folks to actually seek enforcement of rights violations, rather than the courts being basically just a venue for the wealthy.

The only way that will happen is if the Supreme Court rules that speedy trial refers to actual calendar days.

I would love to see it gone but at this point I feel like ending cash bail just means everyone gets charged with "assaulting an officer" in addition to whatever they got hauled in for.

Speaking of, 3 dead in northwest Austin. Police are saying it's another "isolated incident", so just a light spot of killing, no worry at all that the suspect is still at large.

They have closed a nearby major road (loop 360). They also have the general area locked down, with almost all of the ambulances in the area prestaged.

I believe their statements are attempting to prevent mass panic.

They are still looking for the dude. The area is set up in a way that they need lots of people to look for someone that is trying to hide. Lots of trees and hiking trails, parks etc.

I’d be willing to bet that they know exactly who he is. They likely already know of him from previous domestic calls to the address. So it could be reasonable to assume that the dead were the only targets.

I’m not trying to make a commentary on the normalization of events like this, I’m just trying to provide context from the area since it’s very close to me and I’m familiar with it.

Edit: they just said they do know who he is, they are looking for him etc, they don’t think he is looking to shoot anyone else.

Apparently dude is a cop arrested for sexual assault last year. Or at least shares the name with that person, and the cops are not saying it *isn't* him.

Yeah, the wife was filling me in. I had to rewatch the press conference, our audio was all jacked up.

Now I’m confused, one group is saying no danger, the other is saying he may take hostages.

In other news, my neighborhood is talking about an armed neighborhood watch. If that happens I’m getting a x amount of days since neighbors have shot themselves sign.
