Some other countries do have laws like that. Like in Sweden, police have to abort car chases and such if it would significantly increase the risk of the driver killing himself or others. And they're not a serial killer or something, probably.

While national standards have largely sought to curtail the practice of high-speed chases, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) seems to be going in the other direction. It not only allows for the high-speed chases, but it also allows troopers to shoot at vehicles that are fleeing. While DPS policies limit gun use to situations in which the officer believes a suspect will cause harm, they claim the occasional use of firearms from a vehicle is still sometimes necessary.

And while many police agencies around the nation have limited chases to only the most dangerous criminals and crimes, in Texas, there is virtually no distinction made between offenders who flee, which means they chase petty criminals just as rigorously as they do criminals who pose a serious danger to society. Their rationale is that anyone who attempts to evade law enforcement has committed a felony and endangered the public, and should be pursued.

Because in America I daresay most would admit, eve those who pretend that our justice system is good and not racist, that the primary purpose of our police force is to apprehend and punish the guilty, not to protect the innocent.

It's part of why and how our nation is broken. We are far more concerned with meting out punishment and violence than we are with protecting the innocent or preventing misdoing in the first place.

I live in a not-great town, kids steal cars. Every couple of months the police spot a kid in a stolen car on the freeway, chase them, and then cause a wreck in a very busy intersection right off the freeway, often causing fatalities. You'd think after they'd killed the fourth or fifth person in a year doing this that they would just stop but they seem incapable of making that leap and instead just keep murdering people.

e: They did stop for about a year when they killed 2 toddlers doing this but they started up a few months ago and someone else has already died this year.

My guess if less than 10 then there will be some.
If its less than 5, then things going to get hosed.

Any chance he'll just be whisked from jail to a cop safehouse and vanish like Kyle, on the off chance he's convicted?

Its a direct echo to bills that are being passed in states like Florida and elsewhere. So while it might not progress in Minnesota, thats not why they presented the bill. They did it to echo to Police and their Red Voters to show what they could do for them.

He did disappear, and was basically in a unknown location. A benefit that only he gets, no other perpetrator. Any other suspect would be in jail for a safehouse.

in fairness i don't think there's a vaguely possible defense of chauvin that isn't clownish and/or gross

nelson's options consist of "look like an idiot", "look like a monster", and "throw the case", and he appears to have picked both of the first two

See I don't think that's true, Nelson seems to have done a better job for the defence than the prosecution team have done for the prosecution. I think he's done well enough that just from the arguments presented Chauvin getting Guilty but at the lowest possible charge looks the most likely outcome and that's only because 'Floyd was unconscious and Chauvin still didn't lift the knee' is so unambiguously wrong.

But who knows. Guilty at the lowest charge feels the most likely to me but gently caress knows what's going on with the jury, 2nd murder could still happen and Chauvin walks could still happen.

It's twee dogshit, just like putting literal children and unprepped civies on the witness stand was twee dogshit. The prosecution seems to be more concerned with emotive brand-building than winning the specific case.
