Here are the exact laws: UNINTENTIONAL MURDER IN THE SECOND DEGREE https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/609.19 MURDER IN THE THIRD DEGREE https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/609.195 MANSLAUGHTER IN THE SECOND DEGREE https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/609.205 The second degree charge is because Floyd was in 'protection' at the time. Still weird hows its more of a sentence than third degree murder imo.

Chauvin isn't going to be sentenced to 40 years. I think people expecting him to be locked up for more than 12.5-15 years are going to be highly disappointed. Even with a longer sentence, parole comes into play fairly quickly with state crimes. He won't be a cop ever again, though.

I'm really glad to hear that Chauvin was convicted, but I worry that he will be nothing more than a sacrificial lamb. Floyd's murder was such a massive societal moment that to let his murderer go would have been a catalyst for complete chaos. Real justice would be this level of scrutiny being upheld for future deaths at the hands of the police, and I'm skeptical that it's coming. I'm sure everyone else has already thought these same thoughts, I'm just airing them out. Still, this is an amazing result for the moment. I'm glad things went this way and it's terrible that we even had to consider the possibility that the verdict would have been anything else.

This really has to be drilled into people's heads. It's not training. At bare minimum, it's the police culture that makes them think they are above the law, although I would argue the institution of policing has always been the problem.
