Most conservative media figures will be smart enough to say something like this. Even though cops killing black people with impunity is their preferred outcome, throwing Chauvin under the bus lets them blame one of the "bad apples" rather than admit there's systemic rot within the culture of all law enforcement.

The great thing about the thousands of slaughtered Palestinian children is that they can't pull away when you fondle them or sniff their hair.

That's a Biden success story.

When this happened literally everyone was outraged. Even that poo poo heap former President said it was wrong. I'm awaiting to see how many of them change their minds with this verdict though....

He's about to have another long history. It's really going to suck to be Derek Chauvin in state prison, for reasons totally unrelated to the fact that our prison system is inhumane and barbaric.

He's in his mid 40's now. He's gonna be an old man or die in prison. I'd rather he be rehabilitated but unfortunately prison is an industry about vengeance rather than justice. But it's nice to see the bully murderer get his comeuppance.

I was kind of wondering that myself? Also, if 2nd Degree Murder means he committed Murder while committing another felony, then technically what is the other felony?

Here are the exact laws:

UNINTENTIONAL MURDER IN THE SECOND DEGREE

MURDER IN THE THIRD DEGREE
https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/609.195

MANSLAUGHTER IN THE SECOND DEGREE
https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/609.205

The second degree charge is because Floyd was in 'protection' at the time.
Still weird hows its more of a sentence than third degree murder imo.

Also to consider is that a man at his age and with his policing history is not really someone prone to be rehabilitated.

Technically 75, depending on concurrent vs sequential sentences. It will be much shorter than that

2nd degree murder: 40 max
3rd degree murder: 25 max
2nd degree manslaughter: 10 max

Overall, somewhere between 10-20 is likely

i'd guess the judge will give him 20-25, and then he'll get time served and good behavior just in time to get out when he's 62 or so.

Chauvin isn't going to be sentenced to 40 years. I think people expecting him to be locked up for more than 12.5-15 years are going to be highly disappointed. Even with a longer sentence, parole comes into play fairly quickly with state crimes.

He won't be a cop ever again, though.

Get high and think of me.

I'm really glad to hear that Chauvin was convicted, but I worry that he will be nothing more than a sacrificial lamb. Floyd's murder was such a massive societal moment that to let his murderer go would have been a catalyst for complete chaos. Real justice would be this level of scrutiny being upheld for future deaths at the hands of the police, and I'm skeptical that it's coming. I'm sure everyone else has already thought these same thoughts, I'm just airing them out.

Still, this is an amazing result for the moment. I'm glad things went this way and it's terrible that we even had to consider the possibility that the verdict would have been anything else.

This really has to be drilled into people's heads. It's not training. At bare minimum, it's the police culture that makes them think they are above the law, although I would argue the institution of policing has always been the problem.
