Puppet Master was fun, you could create a voodoo puppet attached to an enemy and attack the puppet which transferred all the damage, so your whole team would start beating the poo poo out of the puppet.

There was a bug where if you overkilled it enough it deleted their hero from the game iirc

HoN is only dead if you care about a game you were never going to go pro in not having an esports scene. Same with HotS. I find matches in both of those games seeking way less time than I spend in any of the esports mobas.

The best part of HoN was that disco lady who could make everyone dance on a 70's dancefloor while they took damage

Also Flint Beastwood's VA

I remember joining a wc3 dota game for the first time, immediately failing a quiz because I didn't know how much a tango or something cost, getting booted and then never touching the game again until I got into Dota 2 lol

It was basically a way to play Dota with a ton of modern QoL updates (in terms of matchmaking, reconnecting to games, having an actual modern UI, etc.), but a worse community (yes really) and bad balance. It can be fun to play really dumb OP poo poo, which I think is why some people still have a soft spot for it, but as soon as Dota 2 was a thing, my friends and I never touched HoN again.

It's also a great case study in why allowing players to vote on conceding a game and showing everyone's specific MMRs in the UI all the time are terrible ideas.

HON during its heyday was the game you played if you wanted to test your resolve on how much toxicity you could handle in a videogame.

Easily the most toxic community I've ever experienced in games. Counterstrike had nothing on it. Heck their own CEO got blasted for going off on a racist rampage.

Now it's mostly Russians I think.

It’s telling what we were willing to put up with in terms of the HoN toxicity in order to get basic quality of life things like matchmaking and a dedicated UI.

When HoN came out I played it exclusively and never went back to wc3 DotA. Then DotA2 happened and I had to relearn all the heroes and items again.

And the whole saga always makes me laugh at what a massive missed opportunity it was for Blizzard. What a fall from grace that company had going from the D3 hype and WoW domination to..... I guess they have Hearthstone and Overwatch now?

This is what fascinates me most in existence: the peculiar necessity of imagining what is, in fact, real.

HoN also had mod support so you could automate chat macros for maximum toxicity. It also had a votekick function, which you could use a mod to automatically trigger anytime a teammate died.

There were some legit cool new heroes before the game tried to go F2P and started making GBS threads out a new hero every 2 weeks.

Kild

Ironically the most anger inducing chat macros were the 'friendly advice' ones.

HoN actually hasn't had a new hero added in forever, they've mostly just played around with balance for the last few years, plus a few overhauls for heroes that were just kinda poo poo in their original incarnation.

I still play it from time to time, because it still has the best iteration of Mid Wars I've seen. They actually went out of their way to create an entirely new map for it instead of just slashing the side lanes off of the standard Dota/League layout. I also find it kinda impressive at how many notable people they got to make announcer packs. Three I can think of off the top of my head are Richard Ridings, Hatsune Miku and Samuel L Jackson. If I recall the last one was because Maliken is a big fan and just paid him a shitload of money to make it.

Samuel L Jackson's whole brand for like the last 30 years is that he'll do anything as long as it amuses him and pays him.

Valve's half-hearted discouragement results in threads like this where the OP is asking "hey maybe something can be done about this Nazi guilds?" and then there's tons of comments whining that they're too sensitive.

when hon and league came out all the little noobie carebears went to league to jack off to their anime girls and complain about deny mechanics as being unfun and stuns as being "non counterplay" mechanics or whatever, whereas all the real Gamer Men went to HoN to kick rear end and flame each other like a baws. it was the ultimate trammel vs felucca divide. based maliken even added the incredibly homophobic fabulous announcer pack and dumpster taunt to further troll and dominate your foes

Andrigaar

HoN was my first MOBA because I pirated WC3 and never looked much into custom maps or servers. Most of those lobbies/games ended up being weird Korean ARPGs where the other players only knew enough English to tell me they couldn't speak English and that I should play elsewhere (or gently caress off maybe, I don't remember). If I ever accidentally got into a Dota1 map, I definitely left after a few minutes of confusion, but I doubt I did.

One friend still plays HoN a few times a year so I still have it installed and never run. Each time I go back for a game or two, the squirrely movement and faster turn rate drive me nuts and I hate every moment of it now. Some people call it fluid movement and love it though.

I still skim the HoN subreddit a few times a month. ElementUser does the tiny patches and tweaks, and the community loves him for it. The dark days of WZA being a 1500 or lower ranked player doing the balance are long over (though I suck too much to tell the difference anyway).

Annoyingly I think of HoN item names first and Dota names second because of the above.

What's the most casual mode to play dota on? I like the fast games of new player mode, but the limited hero pool is unfortunate. All random seems like fun, but if the games still take an hour, do I just want turbo mode instead?

To give you some idea of how HoN encouraged toxicity, it literally has a ragequit announcer line for disconnecting shortly after getting killed. And you can pay money to reset your stats and clear your disconnect percentage.
