Everything is Sinister

I'm one of the people disappointed that Karli isn't going to get to be Nomad going forward. I guess if they really want to, they could say she wakes up in the ambulance and then went underground (because who would believe her if she went around claiming Sharon was the Power Broker? All the evidence is in Madripoor, and it'd just let her know Karli's still around) if they change their mind later.

The Sharon heel turn is going to be interesting down the road - as others have said, it'll probably figure into Armour Wars. I kind of hope that it turns out she's not a Skrull, because that'd kind of be a copout (he said, hoping they retcon Karli's death). I'm guessing she killed the fence they met in Madripoor before she could reveal her identity, and I guess was playing along with Sam and Bucky to use them as a lead on Karli. I imagine only a tiny amount of people actually knew she's the power broker, they just think she's the art dealer. Obviously she wasn't expecting Zemo to cap her serum guy, but hey, Sam did manage to get her an in to the US government to work with.

Mackie killed it as Cap, and that speech at the end, while heavy handed, was nonetheless great. And frankly being subtle wouldn't have worked.

Honestly everyone turned in great performances throughout.

All in all, drat fine show. Think I might do a Cloak & Dagger rewatch now. (I'll say it again, it's the most underrated live-action Marvel series. I will be taking no further questions). Kind of feels like it shares a lot of the same DNA with FATWS.

Yeah, i liked that. Digging the wings into the ground so he can brace for a charge was pretty cool. And using them as extra cover when the helicopter hits the bridge

Will we get Sharon's side of the story? I mean if she's risking her life and reputation, to liberate dangerous weaponry from the hands of the US government, she must be the hero, right?

I dunno the likelihood, but if you read this thread and having watched Cloak & Dagger you're missing out. Do it. It's a very good low-stakes show with two incredibly charismatic leads.

Well I feel like they righted the ship a bit with Sam's Speech near the end. I might not be a big fan of the "the socialists are making too much sense, let's devalue their message by making them terrorists" but to have the hero make government officials consider their perspective was pretty good.

I kinda figured they'd just shrug and mutter to themselves "if only they had made their point in a different way, oh well" like in every other action movie that almost made a point.

I'm trying to envision, I dunno, some sort of war hero giving a lengthy speech to Mitch McConnell about how he needs to have the banks work better.

It's.................................a strange concept and I don't know if it works.

It falls totally flat. Those guys would nod and look somber and say that he gave them a lot to think about then going right back to working on ways to make the dead Kennedy's song kill the poor a reality.

Their first movie with an almost all black cast is about the one good time the CIA aided a coup so the US would get preferential treatment when it comes to the export of precious metals.

Yeah and that was bad too!

This TV show boiled down to "better things aren't possible," and "open 'er up".

The action was the only good part.

I'm not as down on the show as that, I think it genuinely tried to be progressive, but it ended up relying on a lot of the same regressive tropes that were constructed and reinforced by old centrist mindsets.

In the end, it's not that The System is inherently wrong, it's that it just need to be nicer! Because otherwise the people that you oppress and disenfranchise will get really angry and try to kill you!

But painting these people as well-intentioned terrorists with a just cause is just another way to demonize the oppressed and the disenfranchised, no matter how well-intentioned you make them, no matter how just their cause. In modern society, poor and displaced people don't have the power to be a threat to the ruling class; that's the whole point. The only people who have the power to physically threaten the ruling class are other members of the ruling class. See: Capitol Riots.

It's not that the system needs to be nicer, it's that a system where a few people have so much power over so many helpless people is not designed to be nice. The actual disenfranchised of the world aren't the ones out there building the pipe bombs and planning to kill its leaders, they're just the ones getting hurt and that's it. And our leaders should stop hurting these powerless people because you're a scumbag if you hurt people, not because you're afraid that they might hurt you in return.

Didn't he say explicitly that it makes no sense to make decisions "only with people like you in the room"? It wasn't perfect, and it's clumsy. I think including "thug" as a label was a good way to insinuate multiple current day movements for change. I think the GRC's final decision was to stop deporting people by force unless I'm mistaken.

Oh. Right. Fair enough. There are probably enough empty houses to house the homeless after the blip just like there are in real life.

Did I miss something about Cap's new suit? Since the new suit was built by the Wakandans, are his wings vibranium? Thinking about how he braced against an entire helicopter crash. Like I know, as Spider-Man said, "that [shield] doesn't obey the laws of physics at all!" but for an unpowered dude like Sam to do that seemed a little overpowered.

That's how Vibranium works though. It absorbs and deflects kinetic energy and basically renders most physical impact inert. When used as a shield it can only do so much but when he had himself basically in a vibranium dome under the wings and shield it could stop pretty much anything.

I think maybe people are expecting a little too much from the comic book show about the nice man with the jetpack and the surly man with the robot arm

Although that's partly the show's fault for trying to wrestle with issues closer to real life instead of staying inside it's wheelhouse the way that the Cap movies did.

I was very pleased with the show. Made me like both Falcon and Bucky a lot more. Sharon Carter's character is just weird and I don't get what she's after. Hopefully something interesting will come of it.

Also WandaVision converted my wife into an MCU fan so we watched falcon/ws together, and have been going through the movies to catch her up on things, which is totally fine by me!

I mean at that point Sharon is still a wanted criminal and she's not fatally shot (in classic movie style, both of them seem to instantly know what is and is not a fatal wound) so taking her in would be a bad idea.

Yeah, that not what's happening in this thread. Nobody expected things to be different, some were slightly optimistic when the text of the show leaned in that direction but this isn't some great failure on our part in understanding how the world works.
