The only reason anyone knows about Song of the South beyond the fact it's banned is because of Splash Mountain and also that's where the song zip-i-dee-doo-dah comes from. Even if it wasn't racist it should never leave the vault because of how boring it is.

Eh, I'd argue film history buffs also know of it due to its complicated racial history, particularly the main black actor, James Baskett. To snip from Wikipedia: quote:This was one of the first Hollywood portrayals of a black actor as a non-comic character in a leading role in a film meant for general audiences. Baskett was prohibited from attending the film's premiere in Atlanta, Georgia, because Atlanta was racially segregated by law. quote:Although Baskett was occasionally criticized for accepting such a "demeaning" role (most of his acting credits were that of African-American stereotypes), his acting was almost universally praised, and columnist Hedda Hopper, along with Walt Disney, was one of the many journalists and personalities who declared that he should receive an Academy Award for his work. In short, Song of the South is a land of contrasts.

I wouldn't be surprised if Disney's gotten better at takedowns since then. I honestly don't remember most of it. With all the hype, I thought it was going to be like that blackface scene in Holiday Inn, but for two hours. Instead it was a generically boring movie. (Not that it's not racist as hell, it's just not jaw-droppingly racist like the Native Americans in Peter Pan or the crows in Dumbo.)

Yeah I'd built it up in mind to be significantly more racist than it actually is, not that it isn't, just that with how hard they've tried to memory hole it I assumed it was real bad

When I ride the ride now, I remember the way it used to be. I become aware of how much time has passed, and of how much the world has changed around me. I am forced to think about how society isn't centering me and my wishes as much as it used to, and the fact that I am growing older and increasingly irrelevant. I remember that I will experience Death one day, with all the pain and indignity that accompanies it. The world will forget me as Time marches inexorably on."

As a kid who would have been "mature" enough to be terrified at the slave auction scene (but not old enough to know exactly WHY), and who would have been absolutely thrilled to see some lady pirates amongst the male ones, I applaud this change. After all, everyone knows there were NO female pirates in real history. SJWs win again!

Anyone looking for a really good thing on Song of the South I HIGHLY recommend You Must Remember This’s season on it. Adds a ton of context before and after the films creation, debut and theatrical re-releases, along with a great overview of race in Hollywood, contemporaneous to all that.

Currently in London, the election for mayor is coming up. It looks like Sadiq Khan, the current mayor will win by some way but it would seem that Lawrence Fox is spending stupid money still on his own campaign, despite currently polling at 1%. Khan was born and bred in London but that doesn't stop people falling over themselves to explain how somehow, he isn't actually British because look, he's brown...

It's also that EVERYTHING about Song of the South is racist, even if it's the quiet sort of 'those humble innocent colored folk who were happily working on the plantations' sort, there's nothing salvageable there. Meanwhile the racism in stuff like Peter Pan or Pinocchio is more blatant but much more fleeting, just making for the 'one weird and unfortunate scene in an otherwise good movie' sort of thing. Even the original Uncle Remus stories that the movie was based on were a white guy taking credit for black folk stories.
