True but to be fair they had very little to work with this year. Minari was the only film I wanted to see win big and I guess Soul. Although I want to see Sound of Metal now.

Trends, sure, but its also precedented. It made sense. Boseman was poised, even with so many heavy hitters this year. Ill accept the Hopkins win though. Im still miffed about Viola though. Where's her drat coca-cola?

Minari is still the last film I have yet to see. I think I might wait until the blu ray comes out. Good year for Asian representation. Was happy to see Zhao recognized before she goes into the Marvel machine even though I wasn't too hot over Nomadland

They were so confident in Chadwick winning that they literally rearranged the categories to have this big emotional catharsis close the show. Instead it goes to a guy who already won, didn't even bother showing up, and they awkwardly cut to the credits. What an incredible self-own.

Riz Ahmed should have won if they weren't giving it to Chadwick, Sound of Metal is incredible I loved or liked a lot of the films up for something this year so I honestly didn't even have much to complain about for once in an Oscar season, so of course the Academy has to gently caress it at the very end

Even if you think Hopkins was a more deserving winner, that's not really the point here -- it's just a total fuckup from the producers. If the winners were the exact same but BP went on last like always, then at least we get an actual speech to close the show and people are too busy retweeting McDormand's howl to get mad about Chadwick losing. It was a baffling decision in real time and looks embarrassing in hindsight.

I saw all the BP nominations but didn't see Ma Rainey. IMO "Sound of metal" and "The father" are the must see movies this year and one of them should have won best picture. Minari would have been good, but watching Minari isn't going to make you think about the farming of korean vegetables in Arkansas in the way sound of metal will make you think about the next person you see with cochlear implants or how the father will make you think about the next person who forgot what you told them five minutes ago. Nomadland winning was pretty meh. Frances McDormand winning best actress is extreme make-up. Her character way originally modeled directly on Linda May, but they CHANGED THE CHARACTER TO MAKE IT MORE LIKE FRANCES MCDORMAND. twerking on the railroad fucked around with this message at 05:07 on Apr 28, 2021 |

Yeah they probably shouldn't have scheduled the award with the absent winner to go last but Hopkins was good as gently caress. This is hardly a case of an undeserving winner. On that note, Promising Young Women's screenplay was hugely uneven. The premise was great but it clearly needed a few more rewrites. Minari should have won. All of them pale in comparison to Parasite, Marriage Story and Knives Out, though. 2019 was a good year.

Honestly, not too surprised by that Best Actor win. I haven't seen The Father but there was a lot of hints that there was going to be this "No one goes there anymore, it's too crowded" effect where a lot of the voters thought "I know Boseman is going to win anyways, but I voted for Hopkins because he was really good in that movie." edit: I feel like a lot of people are reacting like the Oscars is one guy or some panel that convenes and jointly picks a winner, but it's just a ton of voters. You're always going to get weird effects like this from voters anticipating other's votes. Calamity Brain fucked around with this message at 13:14 on Apr 26, 2021 |

I think to shout out Boseman's performance a bit, the reason that I liked him and Ahmed so much is how well observed it was. What made Ahmed and his performances so strong for me is those were the performances where I was like, "I know that guy and I haven't really seen that guy on screen," Especially after seeing staged versions of Ma Rainey, Boseman really took that performance to a new level. Davis did too. They really pushed those characters in a way they were not on the page. That's not to diminish Hopkins' performance, but I feel like the narrative shouldn't be that Hopkins gave the clearly best performance and Boseman was getting a sympathy Oscar. The Best Actor category was truly a crowded one, but Boseman is not going to get another chance. I promise you there were people who voted for Close slumming out of a sense of her being due. I think the bigger bummer is you could imagine Riz won him saying some lovely tings about Boseman. The whole rush off stage really stung.

It's funny how many people out there still don't understand that no one, not even the producers, knows the winners in advance. So rearranging the show this way was a massive gently caress-up based on bold presumptions. It sucks for everyone involved. Like, I don't think anyone out there is seriously blaming Anthony Hopkins and everyone who's actually seen The Father (not me) seems to agree it's an amazing performance, but now his win has this weird tainted effect (which would have occurred regardless as people talked about the snub but made worse by the presentation). Soderbergh gets to take the blame as the director making this decision. Who knows how Boseman's widow felt, given that she's clearly had a hard time going out there all awards seasons giving these speeches and was certainly braced for this final moment that's now gone. The Academy itself just showed its collective rear end by not just missing the biggest layup ever but also by once again making a huge deal about diversity and celebrating Black art and then just giving the award to a white dude who's already won (again no disrespect to Sir Anthony but I think we all know what the optics are). Honestly, just on a moral level, maybe the worst thing they've ever done. Like snubbing Goodfellas or some poo poo, hell even Green Book, man who cares at the end of the day its just movies. But oof, this one was insulting.
