If you weren't able to buy the "remastered" version of Mars 3D, maybe I can interest you in getting yourself an anniversary re-release of (in)famous Amiga Doom clone, Fears?

Actually the price seems to be quite reasonable for shelf candy like this...

In the beginning the robots fuelled by blood were created. This had made many people very dead and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

I used to have this for my CD32, it was ok but if I'm ever buying it again I expect some fixes, this just seems like a straight re-release... I might still buy it though.

Blood vials are often pickups :eng101: but I get what you mean and agree, have them be "use on pickup" and not have a clunky inventory system

For whatever reason this weekend I went down the rabbit hole of checking out all the different (DOS) versions of Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny that exist out in the wild, since apparently every publisher id Software worked with published their own builds. One thing I noticed is that the infamously smarmy manual copy protection in Spear of Destiny is often bypassed in various ways in subsequent CD releases. The 1998 Activision release in particular appears to be a rebuilt-from-source version with the protection removed outright. A couple of things came up though, and I'm curious if anyone knows:

1. Spear of Destiny in the id Anthology is the "original" v1.4 version with copy protection intact. But as far as I know the printed manual isn't included in the anthology? Or was it? Or did everyone know the various backdoors by this point?

2. Multiple SoD CD releases use a disc-based copy protection method where the ISO filesystem is split across two data tracks. See this Redump entry. Does anyone know what name(s) this protection went under?

The CD included a digital manual for all the games (using a 16-bit version of Oracle Media Objects 😬) that lists all the answers.

It’s decent. It replaces the Xen segment of the original game with a longer, more developed bit that takes a lot of inspiration from HL2. Worth a try imo

Really good in my opinion. Xen is WAAAAAAAAY longer but has some Unreal feeling on some of the levels and much better compared to the original. The problem is that, if you don't like Black Mesa's Xen, it'll be a long torture for you, if you like the new style, you'll enjoy all the new gimmicks.

I think Black Mesa is a bad remake of HL1. Multiple sections have terrible difficulty tuning (the ninja sections especially, but also parts of Surface Tension) and Xen went from a short section of about an hour that isn't the best to a multi-hour slog.

The assassins are easier in Black Mesa imo. I always found them obnoxiously hard in the original.

BM Xen has its ups and downs for sure but I don’t know how you can’t be impressed by the ambition of it. The portal activation sequence echoing the HL2E1 core shutdown bit is an amazing piece of work for a fan game.

Kinda iffy on the Patreon. It's totally ok to offer a Patreon, hey if someone wants to contribute, it's nice of them! But I imagined something like 2€ to 10€/month, but the fact is, they have chosen tiers that go from 4,5€ to 69€/month (not including vat!) which can be understood as greedy.

The Assassins in Black Mesa are even easier using trip mines and satchel charges. You can just hide in a corner with the shotgun and they'll come for a ration of lead. Some encounters with marines are harder and they really upped the difficulty, forcing the player to play a lot slower but I find most zones better than the original. Don't get me wrong, I still think HL1 is one of the best SP games ever and I can replay it every year but Black Mesa is fantastic.

Definately worth the sale price for sure at least for a single playthrough.

No worries, I'm pretty sure those neat sprites and textures will be reused in something with more actual gameplay than circlestrafing hundreds of revenants

Was there even a good-looking megawad with vanilla-ish gameplay since Eviternity? Or, hell, half a megawad? I've tried playing Mapwich, I adore the architecture, but there is way too much cute bullshit like new weapons and reloading and hell knights with rocket launchers for my taste
