I mean, he's right but he doesn't have the baked in assumption that capital knows this and is constantly working hard to further rig the system/claw back concessions/sway politics more, etc. Problem with lots an analysis like this is that it makes the mistake of thinking the enemy is stationary target. Also lol at the idea of gig labour being direct or whatever. Yeah, maybe for 5 minutes until corps found out about the money and got in on the action (and, like, uber ffs).

I mean, he's implying that some significant portion of the under-40 population is making livable wages off of YouTube and OnlyFans and Uber, which has absolutely no correspondence with reality—practically every YouTuber I watch talks about their lovely day job and half of Uber drivers are probably in debt from their predatory car lease that Uber provided. What major corporation cares about this at all? Maybe an individual franchise owner is feeling the pain of not being able to hire minimum wage workers during a pandemic where unemployment has been extended well beyond normal circumstances, but I can guarantee you the board of McDonald's doesn't give a poo poo about what he's talking about. They're investing in more touchscreen ordering systems and kitchen automation while successfully lobbying against the minimum wage increase. More impoverished people means more customers for them.

Guy is also 100% looking through a filter bubble. All my friends are fed up leftists and have adopted a more radical rhetoric as a results, this has to be happening everywhere! I think he's getting at an underlying sentiment but ya need big juicy data to back up those big juice claims.

The labor market is running pretty hot and you see a lot of the same talking points coming up in business news. Some of the conclusions that thread arrives at are definitely reaching, though.

Companies started staffing like it was a recession but in the US at least the Fed floated everything back up in time to not crash. So labor is at a bit of an advantage at the moment because companies are stuck needing to backfill existing positions and fill in the growth positions besides. This is within normal capitalism parameters and labor isn't gonna rise up just because we sense nows a good time to shop the market for a raise.

More impoverished people means more customers for them. the local mcdonalds has a now hiring sign out front touting $12/hr starting because nobody's going to bother for min wage. fast food is already automated to the gills, there is not much more that can be done outside of the fantasies of libertarians who want to replace all the unsightly persons with sex-c robots. as a business owner though you need a certain level of bodies in the kitchen to deal with the volume of business, you need those people to show up relatively sober, on time, when you expect them to be there, and in most of the country that is not going to happen for min wage

If there is a labor shortage, I think it's because people aren't as desperate because of UI benefit extension and other aid, so they aren't as willing to take a lovely job at bad pay. The RW narrative on that is that the government handouts made people too lazy to get work, I haven't heard this "gig economy gives workers power" argument before

Mr. Fall Down Terror posted:the local mcdonalds has a now hiring sign out front touting $12/hr starting because nobody's going to bother for min wage. That's money coming out of the franchise owner's pockets. The parent company is actively working against its own employees for profit. I just think as soon as the pandemic is through and unemployment stops being extended we're right back to square one
