Crusty Nutsack posted:but regardless, I think your bigger issue is what seems like favoritism by mods? I mean it's impossible to say that we don't all have posters we like or dislike, but that's because we were part of the community before we became mods. we also get frustrated when we have to keep addressing the same issues from the same posters over and over. I think larry fits into that category, tbh. he knows not to say "retard" here, he's been probated a billion times for it, and he still does it. it's frustratingly confounding tbh. ramping people when they continue to do something against the rules is normal everywhere else, but why does everyone hate it so much here? there's no point ramping this kind of minor rule infraction

The Rules are not some immutable and idealised thing that must be obeyed. legal positivism is bad enough when it comes to actual law and justice, it has absolutely no place in moderating the communism thread on an internet forum lol the whole point of moderation is to make the forums better. if your intervention as a mod will not make the thread, nor the forum, better and you can reasonably predict this, you should not make that intervention. in this case, probating larry for saying "retard" and then defending that decision in the same thread turns the thread from being a communism thread into the "moderating decisions" thread, which is making the thread worse because when i click it i want to read and argue about communism, not about modding discussions. this is bad modding, even if the rule is reasonable, because it assumes that enforcing The Rules is a good onto itself and that The Rules are a pertinent topic of discussion since they're implicit in every thread. moderation is supposed to make the forum better and funnier; when it does not accomplish this and rather makes it worse and more tedious, it is bad moderation.

i dont like to say the word and will not, and generally think people shouldn't, but there comes a point where the tail has to wag the dog or w/e. at some point a rule becomes ungovernable if there isnt popular support for it. its a bummer if most of cspam disagrees but its probably worth looking into figuring out if the (relatively disparate) cspam posting populace thinks it should still be a rule or not

(it's kind of like how no government ACTUALLY rules through fear alone or something, to gesture at the thread topic) however, i don't think this is actually happening and instead there's just a small whiny clique that mostly doesn't post here to start with but won't shut the gently caress up

the point being, if a bunch of people are going to come in and complain about a decision and its propriety etc you should make absolutely sure that there's a real point in making the decision. this decision was bad, and it was very predictably bad because an unpopular mod did an unpopular thing and then turned the thread into "let's talk about modding for several pages" instead of what it's actually about. regardless of the merit of the rule being enforced, this is a bad outcome

Personally I'm of the opinion that it's only a matter of time before someone says with a straight face that larry saying retard is not only him personally doing ableism but somehow also making it acceptable to wider society and when that happens they should be probated so harshly it forces them to go outside and actually do something useful for people instead of just like joining the DSA and arguing about the rules online or whatever they're currently doing instead

everyone posting about "mods", go to qcs. Has anyone here read "Unequal Exchange and the Prospects of Socialism"? I found it quite interesting, though I do admit my eyes glazed over a bit during the tables. The authors of the book actually lived out their programmatic recommendation to materially support anti-imperialist liberation movements: they were the Blekinge Street Gang that carried out bank robberies and sent the money to Palestinian liberation groups.
