To try and retcon the story here, the front passenger hubcap which we don't get to see was obviously missing and the dealer wanted more for the stock one than autozone wanted for a crate of cheapos.

Yeah watching that was painful because it was like $80 to replace one of my OEM caps iirc.

Gummy Bear Heaven ... It's where I go when the world is too mean.
Reminds me of my mom's Gallant when I stopped to pay a toll and the hub cap kept rolling down the highway. It ended up on the side of the road, so I just pulled over and picked it up.

I think my sister lost it a couple of times coming to a stop around the neighborhood, too.

I definitely lost a bunch of hubcaps on an old 80s Pontiac as a teenager. One of those 80s GM hubcaps weighs more than a whole box of those plastic shits.

Eventually I stopped caring and just rolled without any, because it's natural for a Pontiac to just shed random poo poo while you're driving.

I miss spinners. Cheap spinning hubcaps were OSHA as gently caress and on several occasions I watched them helicopter off of a moving vehicle off into the wild.

Super confused since diamond crossings exist but I assume these can go faster.

In the course of learning how slow the static ones need you to go, learned those are called flange bearing frogs or alternately diamond frogs

What is the purpose of this? Why not have a permanent junction?

That isn't going that fast, though. I'm extremely skeptical that whatever time would be lost even if it does have to slow down a bit would make up for the maintenance/greater expense vs. a static diamond.

Trains on the main line don't have to slow down as they would if the rail was broken.

The train on the bridge thingy has to go slow, of course, but you'll notice that the main line underneath is not broken. It's like a sleepy side road that crosses a big main road.

The clip has a Youtube source:

quote:

South of Rockhampton, the QR line is electrified and higher speeds are permitted than further north. In order to increase track speeds for the "tilt trains", this drawbridge arrangement was devised so there is no break in the running rails for QR. All signals are color light.

That crossing rail line looks like it is someone's private line for moving materials around. I doubt the rail company wants to deal with having to maintain that crossing with someone else's line, so that was the compromise.

Well don't you know I'm caught in a trap?

Apparently those drawbridge crossings are unique to Queensland, Australia sugar cane tramways, according to a very brief blurb in the "level crossing" Wiki article.

Here's a website talking all about it.

It's to allow the slow moving narrow gauge cane trams to cross the high speed government rail sections without breaking the rail for the bigger, heavier trains, which incurs a large maintenance burden on wheels and trucks and whatnot.

This makes the most sense. You can generally run full speed through the high speed crossing of the right sort of diamond and it's theoretically the same shape as a normal rail for wheel wear but I can't imagine that being a perfect system for wheel and track maintanence if you can just tell the other guy to go over yours cause they are light tram service.

Clearly the train should simply do a 180 over the other tracks. When you think about it a train is just a huge skateboard that's always grinding

I did this a few months ago, cutting a long piece that was perpendicular to the blade free hand. I know better, should have used a miter saw, but I was in a hurry and just wasn’t thinking. Thankfully I didn’t get pulled into the saw, but the piece that did get flung back hit me right above the nail on my right middle finger. It then went to ricochet off the wall behind me and flew a good 25 feet away.

Couldn’t bend my finger for days, had a nasty cut, and it was somewhat excruciating for a week or so due to the excess blood/pressure under the nail. Took a while for a new one to grow in!
