I'd rate it closer to Terraformars than to Gantz on the spectrum of awful shock schlock. Gantz is nihilism first and foremost. It struck me as angsty edgelord and little else, while Elfen Lied actively offended me.

Yeah, Elfen Lied is...not good. Combining a harem anime with shocking violence for the sake of there being shocking violence would be a hell of a swerve in any time period, but the early 00's were not a good time for nuanced gender and sexual dynamics in anime*. *there has never been a good time for nuanced gender and sexual dynamics in anime

I watched all of Elfen Lied when I was in HS and for the life of me I cannot remember a goddamn thing about the plot, or even really what happens at all after the first episode. There's a naked pink haired girl with invisible doc oc arms and she kills a bunch of people while escaping a lab. That's all I've got. Everything else seems to have mercifully passed from my memory. I never watched Gantz but I did watch Gantz Abridged, which I actually remember being pretty good.

I've finally remembered what I was thinking of! Elfen Leid isn't Blood+! That's the other Toonami anime that never grabbed me that I had little option but to watch or play a game or something instead.

It's the worst because all of these fancy AI tools and poo poo really play into the "Well anyone can draw/write/animate so why do I need to pay you to do it" idiocy you see a lot in basically every creative field. Hell, back when I was learning to animate while our professor told us to never rely on tweening and software to do the work for us; at no point were we ever actually given the leeway or time to not rely on it which meant most students in the class, especially those who didn't already come into it with experience and practiced talent, never had a chance to do anything but make stiff animations relying almost entirely on the software and sparse key frames before graduating and going off to look for work in the field. People continually expect more and more, and they expect it faster; and poo poo like this just makes it easier for them to justify their lovely behaviour and it leads to creative fields potentially getting hamstrung by imposed shortcuts like this.
