LtCol J. Krusinski posted:I could get into the nitty gritty of why this is a big deal, but having NVG’s and laser guided MANPAD’s should have been the give away. You can’t shoot an ATGM at night at a helo without NVG’s. Same for any of the laser beam riders of the MANPAD’s world. Unless the video is edited, that round is too slow to be any MANPADS. Fighters have been caught with NVGs for years. ATGMs are a lot less common in Afghanistan than the Syria conflict, but this isn’t looking from this twitter video like a MANPADS with night sight engagement.

Various militant groups happily post pictures every time they capture some thermal or night vision optics, it appears to be the most valued gear of all. I've seen hundreds of these pictures on accounts like https://twitter.com/CalibreObscura over the years. It's a pretty safe bet that the black market for these is robust by now, I'm sure they get sold and resold all over the world. Seeing how crazy effective ATGMs are nowadays it wouldn't surprise me if that's the next hot item.

BIG HEADLINE posted:Maybe a dialed up paintball gun firing steel ball bearings. Or marbles. That’s going to shatter a passenger side window made of tempered glass completely. It’d be less easy to shatter a windshield composed of laminated glass. Those were definitely live rounds hitting an armored vehicle, and the glass did its job.

Attempted robbery of armoured van carrying mobile phones in South Africa, happens very frequently to the cash in transit guys. Normal Modus Opera is to either ambush them during loading/offloading of cash, or for the robbers to arrive in multiple stolen or hi-jacked vehicles, one of which is usually a Merc or BMW on grounds of them being fast and equipped with good safety features. This vehicle then rams the CIT Van to try push it over onto it's side, and then the robbers will usually proceed to blow the back compartment open with explosives stolen from mining operations, and then make their escape. In this case they didn't manage to push the van over, but you can clearly see that they rammed it multiple times in the video. Alternatively, they will force the guys inside to open up through various means, sometimes to the point of pouring petrol over the armoured front compartment and threatening to light them up if they don't open. Usually you'll have 6 to 15+ robbers in these situations, armed with AK47s and possibly some level of tactical training. You'll find ex security guards, police & army guys (also from neighbouring countries) involved in these gangs who specialise in CIT attacks. They receive intel on the movement & content of these vans directly from their contacts inside the Banks although there's also been instances where staff inside the security companies are in on it. This is what a typical aftermath looks like: (no gore / blood) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HJC8Kt4hn0 I work in the logistics sector and contract armed guards for various commodities (Phones / Cameras mostly). Our warehouse has been robbed twice, although luckily no one was hurt, but it's hardly a pleasant experience being held up, doubly so for our female employees due to the obvious additional risk for them as there's been instances where female armed guards for example are considered part of the loot for these gangs and taken with them & later killed. Normal police is not equipped to respond to these attacks, so these CIT guys either hope police tactical teams arrive, or alternatively the security companies send their own response teams out. I've met some proper dodgy guys who are part of the private response teams, and get the distinct impression that if you are a middle-aged Afrikaans guy who enjoyed their time with the SADF during the border wars in Angola a bit too much, you will find great employment opportunities here.
