After tailgating me for miles he cut in front and brake checked me. I am unsure what I did, I think it was we all pulled over for an ambulance and he wanted to jump in front of everyone and I just pulled back in the lane like normal.

This is the mildest brake check I’ve ever seen.

As the old saying goes; "Any green light you don't take is a green light wasted"! :v:

I see stuff like that periodically here, too. It's been years since I bought my dashcam, yet aside from a driver vomiting out of their door one time, I haven't seen a damned thing worth recording! It's always the way. Then the day my dashcam eventually dies, someone will crash into me, or something

Yeah, I mean, we've all flinched or rolled, but that was the next level of dedication.

Oh sorry - I wasn't at a very good angle, so I didn't bother posting the vid. (I could've sworn I'd posted a still image, though)
They were at the lights and decided to crack open the door for a quick vom, anyway! :D I found it funny, but it probably wouldn't make for good viewing, as you can't really see much. I might still have the original video around somewhere, though

You know where you are? You're in the suburbs, baby. You're gonna drive.

So as a new driver who has yet to pull a trailer irl, what are you supposed to do in that situation. My thinking is "slow the gently caress down and keep the wheel centered. Also load properly before setting off".

Leperflesh
May 17, 2007

When your trailer starts doing that the very first thing you do is lift off the gas and the brakes and let her cost for a sec. It may work itself out immediately. If not, gently accelerate. You pull the trailer out of its wobble. Hitting the brakes makes it worse. Also attempting to countersteer each wobble is a fool's errand.

e. But also A) don't haul more weight than you should, B) drive slower you idiot, C) pay attention to crosswinds and drive even slower in them, and D) pay attention to balance of your load so you're not over or under weight on the tongue, or unbalanced left or right.

IOwnCalculus
Apr 2, 2003

All of that, but again extra emphasis on front/rear weight balance of the trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jk9H5AB4lM

Also, listen to your rear end. If things feel unstable at low speed it's only going to get worse as you go faster.

First, remember that everything you're intuiting is wrong. Don't fight the wobble by steering because it won't just not work, it'll make everything much worse very quickly. Don't brake, same reason.

Gently ease off whatever gas/brake input you're on for a couple seconds, and if that doesn't work gently accelerate and it should correct.

But the real answer is that you hosed something up way before you noticed that the trailer was trying to kill you. Since it won't happen at slow enough speeds, if you think you've hosed up to the point where this will happen (you can probably feel it!) coast down your speed until it feels less sketchy, and then down another ten percent. If that means finishing the trip driving 20 under then that's what you're doing. If you have to slow down more (eg, conditions worsen) then that's what you're doing. Consider it a learning experience.

And not just load it correctly, but secure the load properly too. An unsecured load moving around is even worse than a secure but poorly balanced load. You can compensate for a badly balanced load to the limits of your vehicle's ability to control said load, but an unsecured load is dynamic and changes even in response to your attempts to compensate.

What this sausage party needs is a big dollop of ketchup! Too bad I didn't make any. :(

Also trailer brakes. As long as they're in good shape and actually work, get off the gas and gently apply trailer brakes to slow the hell down. Braking just the trailer adds tongue weight, which is what fixes the problem.

And then get off the highway and take surface streets until you can get somewhere safe to move the load forwards slightly.

Viofo A129 Duo if you want to buy one thing and be done with it. Technically the single A119 v3 has slightly better video quality so if you just care about the absolute best quality, day and night, that's the front camera to get. I got the A119 for my front and the Blueskysea B1W for the back, which is what the mod at r/dashcam recommended. I also like the smaller rear form factor for my Miata since I just mount it on the wind deflector.

My dad wanted one a few months later and we just got the A129 Duo for his car, he couldn't really be bothered to get two products. The only practical consideration for installation is that two individual dashcams will each have a single (thin-ish) power cord running out of them, whereas a dual kit is run by the front camera, so it has a power cord coming out but also a longer, thicker data cable that runs to the rear camera. Doesn't really make too much difference, on the Miata I think it was easier to run the two but on a bigger car it might be harder to get power to the rear. A129 install on a Subaru Outback was pretty easy.

Also storage and phone apps, the two cameras will obviously back up on separate cards and require separate control / apps if you want to wi-fi in (which isn't really necessary, but nice), whereas the twin kit will use a single card and controls for both front and rear video.

Yeah; this is one of the reasons to have a brake controller that lets you brake the trailer seperately. applying just the trailer's brakes applies a centering & dampening force to resist ocillation or drifting
