Did T-Bone have some Varrios Los Aztecas mooks with him in that first mission? The gang Cesar used to be part of, with the turquoise bandanas. Never noticed that before.

No, those were the San Fierro Rifa, whose colors are very similar to the Varrios. T-Bone was their leader.

I know he says he wants to see what we're made of, but I'm still not sure how driving a monster truck through checkpoints is supposed to help with what we actually do in this guy's missions.

Dead weight, just like this post.

Considering the kinds of missions our not mystery man sends us on, you gotta establish a baseline for what your hired (or forcefully coerced in CJ's case) help can do and what their skills are. CJ is a pretty skilled guy for a rando gang member in the grand scheme of things. He's not even a professional criminal or ex soldier like the protagonists after him would be.

Ah yes, that part. Possibly the second worst section of the game.
Funny how both of the worst parts of this game involves the same mechanic.

The fact that you can get a phone call during a mission iirc plays into how speedrunners break this game wide open. I'm not sure about the technicalities, but you can screw with the triggers something fierce if you activate an end of mission (or start of mission?) thing at the same time someone calls you, and skip ahead in the story like crazy.

The PS2, much like most players, really doesn't enjoy any of the parts of the game that involve flying.

The video makes it look like I wasn't doing anything right because I mostly kept the entertaining bits, but the only thing I really had trouble with was getting gold in the Circle Airstrip test because I kept missing the gold time by fractions of a second (if your time is 60.01 seconds, the game rounds it up to 61). I could do the smoothest run anyone's ever seen around Verdant Meadows, and still get a silver by a split second. Usually, that's a sign of the frame limiter having to be turned on (or off), but obviously that's only an option on PC so I was pretty mystified as to why I just could not fly fast enough even on a seemingly perfect run.

I think what was tripping me up was the fact I was too heavy on the throttle and kept slightly overshooting turns because I was still in the Supply Lines mindset of "oh god, I need to floor it!" You still need to be incredibly smooth on the controls because moving the stick even slightly too much will send you off course, and accelerating just makes that problem a lot worse.

Finally getting the gold took about 90 minutes, which is roughly 90 attempts since one minute is the gold medal time. Practically all of those attempts were either getting a silver by a tiny margin, moving the analog stick a bit too fast and missing checkpoints, or "missing" checkpoints I clearly hit. If I had just gone for bronze or even silver or if the game rounded 60.01 seconds down instead of up, I'd have easily completed the school in 15 minutes or less. :argh:

Funny thing about this mission chain. This mandatory for completion mission chain. On the Xbox 360 version of the game, it is entirely possible for the lesson select to crash the game. Which is why I'll have to start from the beginning on a different console if I want to beat the game.

Apparently, if you mash A while the game is loading the lesson select screen, it'll skip that screen and go straight into the next lesson. I haven't tried it myself because I haven't played the 360 port that far, but the Vadim M. video about the "HD" port I posted early in the thread shows the trick working.

Of course, even if you do get past this, there's another story mission later on that also freezes the game. The video shows workarounds for that bug as well.

Tried that, haven't gotten it to work. At this point, I'm more annoyed that the bug exists than anything else.

Nah, the video would get blocked in New Zealand if Toto's Hold the Line was audible for more than a couple of seconds (it still is if you wear headphones, I didn't cut it out completely).

Copyright claims are very different from copyright strikes and usually just mean the copyright owner puts some ads on your video or it gets blocked in North Korea or whatever (worldwide blocks are generally for copyrighted video content). This is the first time since 2016 I've had to deal with a video getting blocked in a country where someone might actually watch it because of a ContentID claim for music.

God, flight school. I remember spending an entire session with the buddy I played this at desperately trying to get it to work, but the plane just would NOT behave. The solution? Turns out retracting the landing gear is not just cosmetic, the plane cannot rise too high and always auto-levels out with it extended. We had done the first few missions the day before then quit, so I had plain forgotten that it was a mechanic, and what the button for it was.

I have played WAY too much flight school, as my friends and brothers' friends all completely sucked at it so I've beaten it for half a dozen other people.

Small movements and leveling off really delicately while maintaining speed is the trick to most of it, but much easier said than done. Still took me hours the first time through.

Episode 27: Viva Las Venturas

Oh, how I wish that there were more than the 24 hours in the day
Even if I ran out of speed, boy, I wouldn't sleep a minute away
Oh, there's blackjack and poker and the roulette wheel
Fortunes won and lost on every deal
All you need is sonar and nerves of steel
So Viva Las Vegas Venturas!

Really, I think the Dead Kennedys version of Viva Las Vegas should've been on the soundtrack because it's the perfect theme song for the GTA version of Las Vegas.

Having passed flight school with, uh, flying colors, we head to the glitter oasis of the desert to have a swinging time. Well, this is a side content episode so mostly we'll just explore the city, collect a bunch of junk, and learn to crash... I mean ride motorcycles in all kinds of exciting ways. I also know perfectly well how to pronounce Las Venturas, so I'm not sure why I keep calling it Lass Venturas.

I’d always understood the horseshoes contributed to a hidden stat which improved your chances at winning when gambling, both at the Venturas casinos and things like the horse racing.

That's the common misconception that still sometimes gets thrown around as fact because hey, it makes sense for them to work that way. However, according to people on various wikis and forums who know this game way better than I do, the luck stat genuinely doesn't do anything no matter how many horseshoes you collect.

I always found it frustrating that the car showroom and chop shop missions aren’t unlocked until you’ve already completed San Fierro and moved onto Venturas, so there’s little to backtrack to Fierro unless you want to go out of your way to do them.

It might have been better to have done these missions at the beginning of Fierro to establish CJ’s garage, then move onto Woozie and the Loco Syndicate. Plus it players would have been more encouraged to do the chop shop missions if they could have done it during the Fierro missions.

I agree, the Wang Cars missions should've been unlocked as soon as you completed the driving school or something. You have to complete the driving school anyway to unlock the ability to buy the place, so why not just tie it to that instead of finishing the San Fierro storyline?

Based on Cesar's dialogue during Test Drive, I think at least some of this stuff was originally meant to be available earlier because those "oh man I like it here in San Fierro, that The Truth guy you always hang out with is pretty weird though" lines don't seem to fit the actual part of the game we're in. We haven't even seen The Truth in the last 13 episodes.
