Is it better to go and write “they’re all wankers” on the ballot or to just stay home and not bother?

I’ve never not voted before but gently caress me there seems to be nobody worth voting for. If anyone else who’s planning on actually voting in the West of England mayoral thing knows of a good reason to vote for any of them I’m all ears.

Better to go. Makes their % of the vote a tiny bit smaller.

Why not vote green? They actually have decent policies and are the most socialist of the lot. Though I admit I don't know the candidate well. And I wouldn't be surprised if there was some anti-nuclear bullshit around, but I don't think the London mayor is gonna be in a position to commission any new plants anyway.

Given how voting is set up, first preference should go to the party you actually want elected, save your second prefs for strategic voting (or comedy cock and balls)

[b]E: didn't refresh the page  though I still think she'd be best, honestly[\b]

I was thinking about green until that tweet was brought up again. Currenlty motiviating myself out of spite to go to the pools purely to try and get Binface to have more votes than Fox. He probably won't care as it's all a publicity stunt but still.

IIRC, the Green candidate is anti-union, so that polling card really is an absolute wasteland.

Not really? It's Good, thats certain. But it never was a big bottleneck, moreso the deindustrialization of the Global South. And we have no clue how broadly the US will apply this. The stuff this would be most helpful to increase production for is more the generic components and feedstocks, so if it's narrowly around the covid vaccines only and not the supply chain tech it doesn't do much actual good.

I mean it's huge in the sense of this is the US telling large corporations and the entire thinktank blob to get hosed and allowing even the merest hint that human life might actually be more important than profits and IP law, a tiny but very important crack in the great wall of late-stage capitalism.

Why bother? I've voted in every election since I was 16 until the PCC elections started when I was thirty-something. I stayed home for that one because I didn't see why that needed to be an elected position. And you know what? The sky didn't fall; the world didn't end. All that happened was the exact same fuckers I would have voted against got in. Exactly the same as every election since I came of age. So I lost my faith in the democratic process for a bit and dropped off the electoral roll.

I got excited by labours last attempt and signed up and voted in the last general election -- it didn't help. There's nothing you can do to swing things. Abstaining doesn't get reported on and spoiling your ballot never amounts to more than 1% of the vote.

This year my polling station has elections for the county council, police and crime commisioner, and parish council. Nothing I do will affect the result so whether I go down and draw a massive cock and balls on the paper or just stay home and drink depends entirely on how much I want to have a walk in the sun.

Edit: this all sounds a bit doom-n-gloom, so I feel like I ought to point out that I did try and have a go at local politics. Stuffed envelopes for the local lib-dem candidate. Even did some door to door before the inevitable defeat. Then they stabbed me in the back by going into a coalition with the conservatives. So there's another party I won't vote for until I'm six feet under...

The Royal Navy did manage to take on two German heavy gunboats and a full warship using two petrol narrowboats with comically oversized peashooters captained by a man otherwise mostly famous for lies, wearing skirts on occasion, and getting court-martialled for wrecking his own ships, and won.

You're not voting green because you actually think the Green Party are perfect people you - you vote them because it gets read as "dissatified left wing votes/Extinction Rebellion supporters" by the media, which hurts Starmer. Or you just give up on elections as a method of change altogether, which isn't the worst idea in the world.
