The thing about Noel for me is that he's next level in doing what he's doing. I think there's an intelligence behind his critiques that seems less that it's come from a political position (I feel like there's maybe one too many critics out there who take the approach of I'm a leftist so this is how I *should* feel) and more because he's really wrestled with the text in question. It helps that he doesn't have an interest in being an on screen performer who REALLY wants to make you laugh and despite my aversion for long videos - I still can't really watch in one go - his tend to have a better pace to them.

I’ll have to give Noah’s Disco Elysium review a watch because I generally trust his opinions and I’ve heard a lot of different things about the game’s messaging. Some people say it’s very pro-communist, while others describe it as more even-handed in its politics, only truly being against racists, which is fair enough. If it’s the latter case and it actually tries to create an open-ended philosophical discussion I’ll probably pick it up eventually when it goes on sale.

ReBoot once had an entire episode that was a tribute to The Prisoner and I'm not entirely where the overlap is in Canadian nine-year-olds who watched a British spy drama from the 60's.

Yeah moralists (centrists) are the ones who are more or less demonstrably shown to be unable to create a happy world. They won in every objective way possible, but everyone is still miserable including the moralists.Bakeneko posted:I’ll have to give Noah’s Disco Elysium review a watch because I generally trust his opinions and I’ve heard a lot of different things about the game’s messaging. The fascists/racists are shown as being a bunch of sad sacks angry they can't stick their boots on everyone's necks. The moralists are shown as wanting a whole truth in the middle reconciliation idea but only because they've brutally murdered all challenges to their power, and regardless of all that capital must be protected. The communists are shown as unwilling to accept injustice and greed even if it means killing 400 million or more to see a dream of equality. Everyone is equally contemptible in their own way but I'd say the way it presents the Moralintern is the absolute worst. It's basically "the money was threatened, so the money responded" and you end up where the fascists and the communists are both miserable and most of Revechol are just looking for a quick FYGM for being good moralist servants.

Disco Elysium is absolutely pro-communist, but it's written and created by a bunch of Marxists who have not only examined but lived through the aftermath of the failures of actually existing 20th century socialist states, and the rise of end-stage capitalism, while still knowing that Marx was right. Its perspective on Marxism is about acknowledging failure and defeat and despair, and then perhaps trying to find something on the other side of that. I mean, just read the Thought Cabinet descriptions for Mazovian Socio-Economics. But then again, maybe that's just me. The game is very personal and that's different for everybody.

Theyd rather call themselves socialists and social democrats. No wonder commies got their asses handed to them 50 years ago. Their little commune got wiped off the face of the Earth. The 90's Marvel cartoons had laser guns, and I think also weren't allowed to show punches connecting, they'd always cut away or cover it up somehow. S&P is a bizarre and arbitrary beast. I remember one of the Avengers toons getting told that their WW2 flashback could either have real Nazis or real guns, not both.

Gargoyles had both, they even had an episode where one of the Gargoyles accidentally shoots someone when he's playing with a gun. Batman got away with a lot of gunplay because they were mostly tommyguns. This does remind me that when the Justice League went back in time to WW2, all the Nazi symbols were replaced with the symbols of the time traveling villain who put Hitler on ice.

The only outright 'no this is the evil team, if you think this side has any level of sympathy or tragedy you're a rube' side is indeed the centrists, to the point where during one confrontation if you botch a dialogue tree enough to wind up forced between tacking yourself to fascist thinking, communist thinking, or just mealy mouthed nothing, the person you're dealing with outright refuses to accept the centrist stance and the game tells you 'you have to say either the fascist thing or the other thing' outright. It's the old Lebowski joke, say what you will about the tenants of national socialism but at least it's an ethos!

My favorite bit of getting stuff past BS&P from the DCAU is that pretty much without fail if a robot appears in an episode, it is guaranteed to get hosed up in some kind of extra violent or gruesome way. Usually decapitation. Or of course, Scarface being horrendously shot to poo poo by a tommy gun. No blood, so it's a-ok!

All this DE talk makes me remember that I still need to replay the game one of these days. I kind of blew through it when it got released, and go so absorbed in the crime drama with a self destructive main character that I didn't really engage with the political aspect of it aside from what the game offers you. And I didn't really think too much about that either. I think I ended up agreeing with Joyce the most while picking picking a lot of the Communist dialogue.
