The mother always look so goddamned tired.

There was one a few years back with two of the kids (idunno, PJ and Dolly maybe) and Mommy and they all have ice cream cones, but the younger child is crying because his ice cream fell on the ground and the older child is telling him, "Don't cry [younger sibling], Mommy will give you hers!" And the mom has that same tired sad look on her face. Of course. Of course she will give the child her ice cream. She doesn't want to. This ice cream was going to be the highlight of her week. But she will. She is a good mother.

I saw that and suddenly thought, "No! NO! I don't want kids! I DON'T EVER WANT KIDS!!!"

It wasn't the first time I'd had that thought. But it was noteable for its intensity, in that moment.

Of course but threatening vandalism means the new manager will just shrug, call the cops and drop the loans and foreclose on the garage because "a good bank can't be supporting violent gangs!"

I dunno, threatening violence against bank managers, a bad thing. That's a difficult thing to accept.

For our American readers, that strip's actually all about the English class system. Jack's from a respectable professional family, whereas Shauna's mum's a cleaner, her step dad's a plumber and they live on a council estate (housing project). Jack's uncomfortably reflecting on the social differences throughout the strip. Shauna rises above it all, of course.

And she's definitely too good for Jack

On further consideration, perhaps "out of his depth" is the most ideal expression for this situation as "in over his head" goes a bit too far the opposite direction from "out of his league" by implying that Shauna's family is dangerous. "Out of his depth" is a more neutral expression than either of those, as it makes no value judgments about whether Shauna's family is better or worse by simply noting they are very different.

Did the non-native English speaking goons like that? I find the ones I meet elsewhere tend to appreciate intense nuanced explanations of English expressions.

Echoing the general sentiment that referencing OBH and Luann as the ideal comics and Wee Pals as the negative example isn't so much a dogwhistle as an air raid siren, but do agree with the sentiment that young artists should be given the space to develop their own ideas and characters instead of being forced to continue working on a 50-years-dead man's idea because the syndicate doesn't want to deal with comments from half-dead midwest pensioners if it goes off the comics page.

I'd like to remind everybody that the "literally living in trees" thing is a local fad. The universe has normal cities, cars, jumbo jets, advanced industry capable of producing computers and so on and so on. The animal universe has junk mail like we do, they need to cut down a lot of trees themselves.

Keep this in mind whenever the comic shits on humans for polluting and such.
