And while the SCG don't have enough MPs to mount a leadership challenge they do have enough to get somebody of their choosing on the ballot paper if an election is triggered by someone else/Starmer resigns. Of course this presumes Starmer doesn't simply change the rules for a leadership election first to block the left, which he might. But the right are nothing if not arrogant and stupid, so I wouldn't say it's a dead cert. We still need someone to actually run for leader though, the talent pool is goddamn pathetic.

Guavanaut posted:The Tory talent pool is also a lifeless backwater. Other than Johnson is there anyone that the country would actually like (disregarding the implication of what liking Johnson says, he's definitely a positive figure, but most of the things he's positive about are extremely stupid)? Gove has a press fanbase but will the public approve of his E. tenax larva in a human suit antics? Does Sunak have a pathway to a relatable public connection? The problem is whoever the Tories choose will have the entire press behind them, so they can simply remake their image however they want. Sunak would be popular and is already a media darling and very good at spin. Gove has a similar born-to-rule aura as Johnson even if the public find him slimy, and Jeremy Hunt projects the same competence as Starmer but is far more comfortable in a leadership role. Basically anyone they picks current public image won't matter much, they'll have all the fawning coverage they want to change it. Look at how popular May was right up until she actually had to do anything. Personally I doubt the next socialist Labour leader (if there is one) could win an election. Their best bet would probably be to pull a Boris and remove the whip from anyone who publicly opposed them, then wait for an election to sweep all the trash out of the PLP even if it meant losing dozen of seats. Then rebuild from there.

What a fantastic night for Welsh Labour members. We've done extraordinarily well in these elections and getting 30 seats is the best result since 2003. Absolutely brilliant leadership here. There's also the prospect of Senedd reform in the next term but some MS's may need leaning on quite heavily to make that happen.

Maybe the Labour for PR people have a point in that respect, get minor parties to stand down for the long term written promise of an electoral system that isn't so vulnerable to that kind of blatant grandstanding.

Unfortunately if you have more seats from the constituency, you have less of a chance to get seats from the list. Blame D'Hondt for that. As Lab have all in South Wales Central and all but one in South Wales East the maths is impossible. Edit: Also I've been stuck in the count all day as we watched number go up and up. My earlier post probably reads a bit sarky against the English results but by God does it feel good to have worked hard to get a good MS elected and get rewarded with actual full blown electoral victory.

Just reading Rent-a-tool's take down of Starmer. And once more I'm reading about 'the working class'. How IS the working class defined these days? Money? Property ownership? Education? I've a friend who is a reasonably well-paid person in the arts who claims to be working class because she was brought up in a council house. She thinks I'm middle class because despite my family living in tied accommodation until I was around 12 years old, and my parents being very poor and my grandparents were factory workers or working in a sewing workshop, nan was widowed at 49 when granddad died of some lung disease he picked up working in a foundry, I went to university and had a well-paid job until about 14 years ago when I decided I wasn't playing that game anymore. If you own your own home and/or have been to university, earn more than the <£30k median income, can you legitimately say you are 'working class' anymore? And has been pointed out on this illustrious talking shop, dismissing youngsters on zero hours contracts, paying extortionate rents in London, unlikely ever to get on the property 'ladder' (who says it has to be a ladder, but I digress), as 'entitled, metropolitan elites' is plain wrong. If you go by marxist definitions of the word yes, but I obviously think there is a material difference between people who are doing well enough to own a house and people who will die having never owned anything and likely in debt. What newspaper writers mean by it could be loving anything. OwlFancier fucked around with this message at 02:41 on May 8, 2021 |

The media definition of working class seems to be anyone who grew up in council housing in the 40s, 50s or 60s. Current material conditions do not apply. Except if you're left wing, then you need to demonstrate immediately that you are living in crushing poverty*. Ownership of any material comforts like, I dunno, shoes, proves that you are just a champagne socialist. *if you are living in crushing poverty its because you're a work shy scrounger

According to the papers, working class just means you have an accent. Middle class is usually an economic conceit and can mean anything from an office job to a columnist earning over 250k a year, as long as you have dinner parties and no accent. I've heard renters struggling at a call centre call themselves middle class and I've heard building firm owners with no mortgage and a fleet of land rovers call themselves working class. E: Milo, Nate & Hussein of Trashfuture did an episode about home counties guys, going into this peculiarity of the essex londoner who thinks he's working class while owning a business and an ex council house: https://trashfuturepodcast.podbean.com/e/unlovked-britainology-3-understanding-home-counties-guys/ It doesn't help that when some of the older generation bought their houses it was still possible for a dual income household with genuinely working class jobs to qualify for a mortgage. When my mam and dad bought their place back in the mid 70s it was £76k and they were able to pay for it on the wages of a gas fitter and a hairdresser. Their parents thought they were mad because the mortgage repayments were a relatively huge chunk of their income. I've literally had to explain to some people over 50 that it costs more to rent than it does to pay a mortgage now, and every time they keep saying that can't be right and I must have gotten something wrong. There is still a sizeable chunk of the 60+ demographic who still think that renting is cheaper than a mortgage. Bobby Deluxe fucked around with this message at 03:53 on May 8, 2021 |

I met someone who claimed that anyone who earns an income from their labour (rather than renting out capital) is working class. Premier league footballers are all working class by definition.

Ravel posted:I met someone who claimed that anyone who earns an income from their labour (rather than renting out capital) is working class. Premier league footballers are all working class by definition. And that someone was karl marx, as this is literally his view of it. There are two classes, the working class, who are required to sell their labour, and the bourgeoisie, who make their money by owning things and using that ownership to force other people to give them a portion of the value they create by labouring. A footballer cannot foot ball profitably without entering into a contract with a football club and league, because the clubs and leagues own the means by which the foot baller can produce value, thus the people who own the clubs and leagues get rich by exploiting the labour of the footballer. I agree, though, that its utility as a practical political theory starts to deterioriate when you factor in the simple effects of wealth disparity because while yes, technically, the mechanism is the same between a footballer and someone working in a shop, the fact that one is likely to be much richer than the other means that one of them has a much greater stake in keeping society more or less as it is. They might both technically be being exploited but something that was perhaps less obvious in Marx's time is that it is actually very possible to have a lot of people technically being exploited but also benefiting quite a lot from a society that allows them to purchase some of the benefits of exploiting others. He probably should have understood this happening at least internationally but I gather he was a bit of an idiot as far as the concept of colonialism went.
