There's tons of great anime that don't have dumb cliches, or bad writing, or poor pacing.

None of them are long-running shounen or seinen action series or trashy isekai harems though, so if that's all someone is exposed to then it starts to seem like an "all anime" problem to them. It's like watching 100 episodes of "That's So Raven" and making conclusions about American Television, without ever knowing that shows like The Wire exist.

Anime is just like any other entertainment medium. There are a few winners, a whole lot of losers, and even more midtier muck that is dependent on how personally invested the consumer is.

Exactly, which is why I didn't like seeing "oh maybe anime just isn't for you because it's all like x" being tossed at someone new to the medium who is actively looking for those gems.

its also why just tossing a bunch of the most popular anime at a new person doesnt really work because, the most popular anime tend to be action-y stuff aimed at teenagers, which does often run extremely long and rely on well-worn storytelling tropes to cover the ground from point a to point b, because its running long and the writer mostly cares about the emotional beats they want to hit.

  • Studio Ghibli (but who doesn't?)

I'd say keep watching enjoyable anime-adjacent stuff like Teen Titans, Megas XLR, Voltron, until your tolerance has built up sufficiently to enjoy anime.

I dunno it sounds like they prefer western animation, and not the usual western-like anime (cowboy bebop, trigun, outlawstar) that a lot of people on-board with.

the list of shows they watched and didn't like is all in the realm of 'cool edgy dude' shonen/seinen action stuff, its not like they got a varied sampling of anime and didn't like any of it, they just got shown the same sort of thing a bunch of times.

While the Persona games are tropey as poo poo, I don't think many people realize how much the slick aesthetics and being a video game mask a lot of that poo poo from the casual observer. Being active for a video game is an entirely different experience than being passive for a movie/tv show. You're in a completely different mindset when you observe games than you do other media.

When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change.

Thank you everyone for your recommendations so far. I'm compiling them all into a list. I'm housesitting next weekend so my plan is to watch the first few episodes of each and see what sticks. I'll report back of course!

I am a bit bewildered by the "Maybe you just don't like anime. Stick to western media."-ish takes. I suppose I could have said a bit more about why I like those games--it's more than just the gameplay or something. I adore the characters and the worldbuilding. I go deep into the lore.

I recognize that the way people interact with games is fundamentally different than shows/movies, as AlternateNu said, but I really do think I am capable of liking anime. It's just nothing's clicked yet.

I do admit though that I was a bit frustrated when I wrote my post and I suppose some people are picking up on that. I had just sat through another episode of something that a friend swore I would like--which I inevitably disliked--and I think I channeled that energy. Apologies if my frustration with specific shows and tropes made it seem like I was frustrated with anime writ large.

And what should one do to be remembered?
My mom's looking for more shows in the style of Yuru Camp, Non Non Biyori, A Place Further than the Universe and Hibike! Euphonium. Only disclaimer would be that she finds fanservice-y shots and stuff like boob jokes to be mildly off-putting, at least in the context of shows where the cast are teens or younger. I mean, all of the shows she enjoyed had those (except for Yuru Camp IIRC?) so it's clearly not a deal breaker, but something she'd rather avoid :v: Forgot to mention, she's currently watching Amanchu and she's enjoying that, despite the constant muppet faces.

Barakamon is a great show about a calligraphy nerd from Tokyo moving to the countryside to find new inspiration, and with her previous likes it seems an almost certain fit.

Sweetness and Lightning is about a single dad learning to cook for his daughter. Just adorable all around, with a good helping of food porn, it's hitting a lot of the same vibes that Yuru Camp did for me.

Azumanga Daioh might also work - there are certain parts of it that haven't aged gracefully surrounding a pervy teacher, but that is mostly constrained to smaller side jokes. The rest of it is really funny and heartwarming.

Also seconding Flying Witch.

Most of the anime your mom watched are slice of life, aka sol. I don’t think any of my recs have more then incidental fanservice, but its been years since i watched some

Super cub this season (countryside and same town as yuru camp)
K-on! (Same studio as hibike)
Flying witch (countryside sol)
Barakemon (countryside sol)
Houkago Teibou Nisshi (village sol)
Hyouka (same studio as hibike)
Shinryaku ika musume (small town/beach sol)
Tsuritama (small town sol)
Usagi drop (dad sol)

i would not recommend the azumanga anime because while the kimura jokes are mostly short they are uh, in almost every ep after a point, and are so bad that personally i kinda feel like the show is ruined by them. if she's willing to read manga though iirc the manga is better

i would second most of dav's recs and also yama no susume

lucky star is also pretty good, the first four eps are kinda weak and there's a couple jokes that might be slightly weird (konata's dad) but they're not like super pervasive throughout the show

hidamari sketch is really good and iirc almost all the fanservice is centered around adults

comic girls has kinda a weak first few eps but it's got fun characters, there are some jokes about the one who draws more erotic stuff that might put her off though? nothing like super risque but it's there

new game's cast is all adults but they are drawn a bit young-looking and there's some butt shots and stuff so that might come off a bit weird? if she's fine with that though the first season's an ok sol show and the second season has some legitimately good character writing

it'd be a fine show still if it didn't insist on every episode having an anime original joke that's just the same process of "kaori is gay for sakaki" > "kaori sees sakaki and is happy" > "kimura harasses her" > "kaori is depressed". even barring how weird the joke itself inherently is it gets, kind of jarringly mean spirited for what azumanga is

imo the manga is good if just cause the anniversary chapters released with its omnibus have some incredibly funny jokes and gives kaori way funnier writing than anything she gets in the anime, including a joke that's just her basically confirming that she really does just have a huge crush on sakaki and doesn't really care about how gender factors into it. and also

also the anthology chapter done by aoki ume has one of the most incredible jokes in 4koma history

I'm late, but one of my first thoughts was Twelve Kingdoms. It may take you more than just a couple episodes to get into it, but it's an eastern fantasy series known primarily for world-building and character development.

When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change.

Just an update. I watched the first few episodes of a couple of the shows (I didn't end up having a marathon--I forgot FFXIV Fan Fest was this weekend so I was watching that all night Friday and Saturday) and here are some thoughts:

Death Parade - I really enjoyed this one conceptually. I like the characters and want to know more about them. I thought the first episode was super weak--it was kind of torture porn, but then the second episode really redeemed it and added more depth to the characters. I would absolutely watch more. 8/10.

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju - This one was strange. The pacing was super off like it felt like I was watching the highlight reel from a longer show. For instance, the woman living with the older actor guy just suddenly declares that he killed her father and then the scene ends and we're off on this other scene a few days later like this huge reveal didn't just happen. I enjoyed the art and I liked the idea conceptually--they also do a good job making one guy on a stage telling a story interesting, but everything else just hampered it for me. Probably won't watch more. 4/10.

March Comes in like a Lion - I have no idea what the heck this is but I know that I loved it. This is what I imagine when I imagine what anime should be. Like there's a murder mystery, the cats are talking, the guy's teacher ate his rice ball like some sort of crazed bird, there's several screaming girls he sometimes stays with(?), and there was like a 5 minute sequence of the main character just having thoughts about life while he went grocery shopping. I want more of this. 10/10.

Haibane Renmei - I didn't find this super compelling. It felt like there was just so much talking and very little going on. The part where the wings burst out was gross as heck too. I didn't find the world all that compelling. The art was serviceable but nothing special. I don't have much to say because I found myself pretty bored by it. 1/10.

March Comes in Like a Lion is freakin amazing, I'm glad you liked it. Sorry to hear Haibane Renmei wasn't to your tastes--its actual plot doesn't start until around episode 06 or so, but having rewatched it various times since I was a kid, I've come to appreciate that it's actually very well-structured the whole way through.

March Comes in Like a Lion is a legit masterpiece though. I think the only recent anime that's come close for me has been Mob Psycho 100, which is also an incredible and exceptional anime, but I think the sad shogi slice of life just connected with me more.

Tatami Galaxy captures some of that crazy, frenetic daily life energy pretty well too. Just keep in mind that the first episode has a lot of fast dialogue so the subs can be kind of wild--after the first episode it becomes normal though.

going back to this, it might be worth giving attack on titan season 2 a shot. i'd say it's pretty universally agreed upon that the first season is the weakest (if the most iconic), and as the show goes on the characters get, like, retroactively really fascinating. at the time i finished season 1 i would've agreed with you that i wasn't super fond of the most of the characters, but now that i've seen through season 4 not only are the lore and worldbuilding still great but i'm also pretty in love with most of the characters. AoT really loves recontextualizing everything you already know about the story with each of the dozens of twists and that includes the characters' relationships to one another

The first episode is more like a tease for the entire story. In the aforementioned moment you thought was confusing, it's narratively meant to make you wonder what the history is between those two and if the show will answer questions & resolve those inconsistencies. I'd give the next episode a shot since it ends up being fairly different than the first and more straightforward, if you don't like it then, you won't like the rest of the season. Rakugo Shinji imo is one of anime's strongest dramas, but it also doesn't really have a lot of the goofy stuff that endeared you to March Lion.

Ibblebibble

Yeah Rakugo is an incredibly strong drama. The first ep is very much to get you asking "who are these people and why are they like this?" and then the following episodes will answer your questions.

Speaking of Rakugo, I've got a relative into anime and Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is one of her favorites. Her other favorites are Nodame Cantabile, Yuri on Ice, Ping Pong, Hyouge Mono and (of all things!) Kaiji. She gravitates towards (grounded) historical stuff, anime that don't have a high school setting, and anything about the appreciation of the arts. Accordingly, Hyouge Mono is probably her absolute favorite. Any ideas on anime to recommend to her next?
