"Host" is a very fun horror movie about a seance on a Zoom meetup. They're doing the zoom meetup because of covid and covid shaped where they're at in life (one girl is stuck isolating with a boyfriend she only recently moved in with, one guy is with his super rich girlfriend and loves it), but it doesn't drive the plot at all.

Most of my team for work is pretty much vaxxed, with one person who just got her first shot.

I hopped onto a meeting and she was in the middle of talking about how she and her family wasn't planning on getting shots but they were at her grandmother's funeral on Saturday and found out she kicked because of covid and found shots on the way home. :negative:

Then she was talking about how hard she got hit by the side effects Sunday and Monday " but I still had errands to run and people to visit" and I was glad I was muted because JESUS.

She's already had covid in March and got wrecked, and she's a low key chud with a hyper chud husband...

Well, at least it is nice to hear that the vaccination is working and places with herd immunity can go back to normal. Meanwhile in our Northern Socialist Hellscape

-Government decided to also shelf J&J vaccines, after admitting that they have at least 200k doses in their storage (we are a population of 5.4 million).
-They also decided to shelf all remaining AZ (also 200k+), and the ones still coming (1M+) with the exception to those who already got their first shot. It will not be available anywhere, even for the volunteering people.
-Since the ages 60-65 threw a tantrum over not being allowed to pick what they want, we vaccinated over the weekend less than 2k people, and are sitting on just around 35-40% depending if you count the kids in or not. Some areas are still stuck on the 60-69 -group, some are in the 50-59 and few in the 40-49.
-Being asked "why aren't the infection case numbers getting lower even if around 2/5 of the population is vaccinated at least once" the officials answered "because our strategy right now is not to vaccinate those age groups and people who most likely get the infection". No followup questions.
-We are still getting around ~220k doses per week, and the government just keeps moving the timeline once per week, because our officials declared that "After April it is 400k+ per week". The fact that the parties forming the government right now are mostly backed by elderly people and rural folk does not affect this in any way. There is also the municipal elections happening at the end of June. So there is no incentive at all to stall the vaccination rollout to younger people and focus only on the old baby boomers.
-There will be no leniency or re-negotiations on allowing younger people to get the vaccines in any near future. Regardless of if we get the promised AZ, more J&J or even Sputnik. This means that anyone under 40 will be sitting home for the most of the next Summer also, while the government sits on a stockpile of almost 1M vaccinations by the end of June. We are still a population of 5.4 million, and parties forming the government right now are mostly backed by elderly people and rural folk, in which the regional coverage will be hitting 50% by the end of the month.
-Vaccinations for my age group will, if it happens in any time scale, be just few weeks before the summer ends, so everyone who actually pays taxes will sit home also this Summer, and be nice and ready for the next year of work.

Looks like I am going to have to vote for the loving nationalists to get rid of these babyboomer-cuddling social democratic and centrist assholes.

there's a few different ways media have been handling COVID, and some are good, some are not so good.

1. Just pretend it doesn't exist in the universe, and go about your day. This has been working pretty well for some shows, and has led to some interesting cinematography choices (The Rookie did an episode a few weeks back that was shot solely from cameras that while a bit forced, only would exist in universe, so the body camera shots they've already used, police car cameras, a surveillance camera, stuff like that). It does result in awkward framing of shots sometime where you're obviously trying to keep your primary talent 6+ feet away from a 2 line actor.
2. It exists, but plot armor protects the main characters. This would be your FBI: Most Wanted. Background actors? wearing masks, literally everyone else, no masks, no reference to covid or them wearing masks ever.
3. COVID exists but is kinda treated as masks not important all the time (which from a "we hired you to be pretty and act" is kinda understandable), Grey's Anatomy and others live in this world.

I'm fine with 1 and 3, 2 is just ridiculous.

Lots of arthouse cinema exploring the themes of isolation and quarantine came out in the past year. Plots that happen all on zoom, or similar abound.

Obviously because of these decisions there are also talks arising from the "Moomin mamma social democrats", the care bears of the world, on "if we should donate our unneeded AZ and J&J vaccinations to the countries that really need them" while sitting on a national level of 35% of all, 44% of adults, in our own country. I just ----can't process this stuff at all. Now this is still on the social media stage, but knowing our government care bears its only a matter of time (and it is day after the municipal elections).

Pretty accurate - there’s plenty of skeezy companies like Citibank who get college kids to sign up for credit cards using free burgers (literally one free burger) as incentive, and it works like a charm.

The mask thing would be a bigger problem for a new show, but it's season 6 so anyone who has been a fan for 5 years should be familiar with the facial expressions these characters use when mugging for the camera. Besides it's a light sitcom, it's pretty clear what is going on even without looking at their faces.

Black-ish had a pretty good series of episodes, with some emotional heft since the mother is a doctor. I feel like they moved to option 3 as the season progressed, though.

Queen Sugar has gone full depiction, with the main characters wearing masks in each other's households and a neighbor who goes full shut in paranoiac when a character tries to deliver him a care package.

I’m fortunate to not have lost anyone to COVID and my whole family minus children are fully vaccinated, and I really haven’t been affected in the way that many others have. But I just feel so anxious looking at that poster. I mean kudos to them for getting creative with the pandemic or whatever. I just feel weird about the whole thing.

The actual answer is that herd immunity isn't the point where the virus disappears, it's the point where the reproduction rate R0 = 1 and the virus stops increasing exponentially, and it's only once you pass that point that the numbers start getting lower. There's still going to be a long tail of cases & deaths after the herd immunity point has been reached.

Of course if the government is also imposing other kinds of restrictions (masks mandates, social distancing, crowd limits etc etc) that'll artificially push the number of infections down and if they manage to keep them in place until herd immunity is reached that means the tail of cases & deaths will start from a much lower count and will be a lot shorter, but if they open 'er up prematurely cases will just shoot up all over again.

The NY Times did an article about different paths towards herd immunity where they looked at how increases in vaccine supply/restrictions/variants will effect how quickly the population reaches herd immunity and the rate of deaths in each scenario and the obvious conclusion is "Increase vaccine production and for the love of god don't drop the precautions"

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/04/learning/whats-going-on-in-this-graph-covid-herd-immunity.html

Note that I think their estimates for "total immunity" (number of vaxxed people + number of recovered infections) is incredibly optimistic and massively overestimates the number of recovered infections, plus their graphs which show vaccine supply continuing "at the current pace" obviously show an increase in supply, plus assuming that vaxx uptake will remain at a steady pace and not drop off at all or hit an upper limity thanks to vaxx hesitancy is also pretty naive.

Also note that they don't cover the 5th scenario "vaccine supply continues at current pace, more contagious variants appear but we also ease up on restrictions" which is what most of the US seems to be doing
