pantslesswithwolves posted:I’ve posted about this before here and there, but from late 2009-2010, my then-girlfriend (now wife) and I waited out the Great Recession by living in Egypt and teaching English. Our time there also coincided with the Gaza Flotilla Raid. Despite our best efforts to keep politics out of the classroom (to protect our students and the institution as we knew the Mukhbaharat had informants in classes who were monitoring for criticism of the government or Islamist sentiment), people were upset and angry over that incident in particular and wanted to discuss it. In addition to some well-founded criticism about Israel’s conduct, the majority of the poo poo I heard frankly made me understand Israel’s siege mentality. Namely people throwing out straight up anti-Semitic stuff about how Jews control the media and the banks, that Israelis were told to stay away from the WTC on 9/11, and also that Jews had the secret ability to fly. This came from students who were otherwise bright, friendly and in many cases were already professionals (doctors, lawyers, etc) in established careers. Hearing goofy poo poo like that definitely casts the historical problem with anti-Semitism into sharp relief. Just wanted to say I really appreciated this post. Don't really have much to add to the discourse at large except that I'm pissed off and tired of seeing this poo poo happen time and time again.

Reminder that it is functionally prohibited in many US states to boycott Israel. Companies and organizations that refuse to do business with Israel are barred from doing business with the state government. At the federal level there is a longstanding prohibition on companies boycotting Israel in the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), which was designed to prevent assisting the Arab League in the 1970. More recently there is an ongoing attempt to make personal boycotts of Israel a crime via the "Israel Anti-Boycott Act" and the "Combatting BDS Act". quote:Combating BDS Act (S. 1) is an anti-BDS bill passed by the Senate in the 116th United States Congress intended to counter the BDS movement's call for boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel. It passed the Senate in February 2020, but is unlikely to come up in the House.

Fiji is going into lockdown https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/300306273/pacific-covid19--nine-new-cases-reported-in-fiji Fiji's FBC news reports three of the new cases are co-workers of a staff member of Extra Supermarket, who had tested positive yesterday. Health Permanent Secretary, Dr James Fong, said Extra Supermarket operates with a well-enforced policy of mask-wearing, and mandated that all staff and customers have the careFIJI app installed with bluetooth turned on, and this has allowed teams to identify hundreds of contacts very quickly. That last line seems very not good

I wonder what our decline rate would look like if we raffled off a duty-free or special liberty chit to people who have gotten vaccinated. Unfortunately CO's aren't allowed to do anything to incentivize getting the vaccine or punish not getting it.

Nearly every BEV and HEV has the same issue of the accessory battery going dead because it’s generally a good idea to open a relay and isolate the high‐voltage battery from everything else when the car is parked and not charging. The EV1 was a notable exception; it featured a button under the dash to manually connect the big battery to the accessory system and let the car jump itself. I was going to say that “Tesla is particularly dumb for making the battery that hard to get to”, but it looks like May is just doing it wrong. There’s a positive terminal available in the fuse block. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wQXiGCMVgE Tesla at least used to have a bad problem with rapid discharge because of bad programming and the “always online” bullshit that techbros eat up. I don’t know if they ever got that under control. e: Wait. That video is a Model X. Great job, Google. Maybe it just is that bad on the S. e2: or not: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPUcUOd1r1w&t=138s e3: or yes again because they removed that in later model years. I-40 is closed in both directions over the Mississippi River in Memphis. Barge traffic under the bridge is also stopped. https://twitter.com/cfishman/status/1392550255409909761?s=20 Professional opinion: NOT GREAT! Although the issue is going to be if they find more fractures more so than how they are going to fix that section. Reading through it, I guess they were getting ready to start the routine biennial inspection and eyeballing some things using binoculars. It sounds like they are going to perform a full emergency inspection and a load rating........which takes a bit. Luckily there is another interstate river crossing nearby.
