A lot of people are completely convinced that if they are vaccinated they will almost surely not get COVID and on the off chance they do get COVID it'll be no worse than a minor cold and there is zero chance of it being any worse than that and I don't wanna jump to conclusions or anything but I think our public messaging might be poo poo.

They got that number by just taking the total number of documented breakthrough cases and dividing it by the current number of vaccinated people. Which is very much not how you would calculate effectiveness percentages. The two big issues being that you can't just look at total numbers, you have to look at the rate for vaccinated people vs the rate for unvaccinated people and also that a huge percentage of the total number of vaccinated people only became vaccinated very recently.
