Republicans don’t need a narrative to blame black peoples for anything. They’ll do it anyway. A mass shooting is a mass shooting is a masa shooting.

For sure, the GOP will always point to black people, or minorities of any kind, for any evil they see.

But "mass shooting is a mass shooting is a mass shooting"? They're really not. Unless your end goal is "ban all guns." There's a huge difference between a guy coming into a black church and murdering people, or a a guy going into his former workplace and opening fire, and a gang turf scuffle where 3 innocent people get shot in the crossfire.

There's a big difference in attempting ways to reduce, say, gang violence in general and drive-bys where innocents are caught in the crossfire, than how to reduce actual active shooter mass shootings.

Ending the drug war, instituting M4A including mental healthcare, revitalizing our cities, investing in universal pre-K and educating our kids, ending the militarization of police and reforming all police to have national standards and accountability, ending private prisons, and giving people a UBI would be way more effective at reducing gang and street level violence. It'd also actually be effective, unlike "assault weapon bans" and other idiotic gun control laws.

For sure the above would also work a great deal at reducing workplace shootings, deranged assholes, domestics, and typical mass shooters, but it would by no means eliminate them. And we'll still have right wing terror shootings. Unfortunately I don't think those will ever stop, even with heavy DOJ and FBI scrutiny on those fuckers.

But to treat a disease, you have to diagnose it, right? Go treat a wound, you have to correctly assess / evaluate it, right?

All I'm saying is that there are multiple types of violence that can occur that qualify as a mass shooting (usually defined as 4 or more people shot dead from a single event, according to the FBI) - domestics, gang violence, terrorism, racism/terrorism, workplace, or random/deranged. And some legislation won't affect one or more of those categories, while other legislation would hopefully effect more of those categories. Just saying "universal background checks" won't solve the issue, nor will an "assault weapons ban."

The ways I posted in my post above would do more to reduce violence, including mass shootings, than any gun control law would ever hope to do.

I think you're talking past each other. The point is that different circumstances require different policies to effectively address, unless what you're advocating for is abolishing private gun ownership in the US as the solution to all violent crime. In and of itself, that's not a dishonest position to take, but if that's what you're advocating for, then by all means advance it here.

How can you be so sure about this? Has it ever been seriously tried in the US so that you can make this definitive statement? Australia did nothing all that different before and after 1996 other than comprehensive gun control, and saw an immediately significant and sustained decrease in gun deaths as a result. "Gun control doesn't work" is just an American truism that ignores actual comparative data.

It's been covered earlier that a lot of these people Greenberg/Gaetz paid for sex were more or less coerced into it, or at the very least pressured. It's really icky and not just a sex work thing, even if the women were barely over 18.

But the article has a bunch of other fun stuff, like Greenberg using county resources to mine bitcoin, Greenberg basically turning the whole thing into a no-show government contract job, and Gaetz expensing the hotel trips to his campaign account. It's bonkers nutso and worth reading even if Gaetz skatez.

When prostitution or other types of sex work is illegal theres a high potential for abuse so in this context you probably should. Its one thing to go to Nevada or another state where there are nominal protections.

That’s an interesting perspective on the ACE thing and SEALs. There’s definitely something to that.

I went through a pretty good chunk of BUD/S and while the mast majority of the people are from relatively privileged backgrounds it seems like they were running from something, and after talking to a few fiends that both “made it” and didn’t make it I think all of us have insane anxiety issues. You have to be running from something to want to stay on the mental razors edge you have to be. I didn’t realize just how hosed my mental state was until I quit and decompressed for a couple days. I only did it for a year I can’t imagine doing it for 2 and a half and then going to war over and over.

It’s basically designed to find anxiety ridden type A people and turn them into death squads to be set loose in the third world.

Also PED use is basically a given, half my class was on something and all but a few of the officers were juiced.

Spec ops selection is mainly about psychological resilience so I could see childhood trauma helping to prepare for it.

Spec ops itself is pretty close to an abusive family. You have to hang out in confined spaces with people who hate each other and the low ranking guys get hosed with all day while not being legally able to say no to anything their superiors say while the superiors just gently caress with them for fun. "It happened to us so it's gonna happen to you" was something that I heard multiple times.

Combat is actually a welcome break from it all since the jagged alliance of assholes finally all get pointed at a common enemy.
