The internet's given us many great examples of how people isolate themselves into small groups that self-radicalize and rapidly spin into insanity. It was just harder to do pre-internet.

Real proletariat cannot starve, nor die of exposure. Ergo, those peasants who died in the famine that never happened were not proletariat and therefore deserved the deaths that didn't occur. QED.

When being more ideologically pure means wealth and power and being found to be less ideologically pure means your entire family being murdered by righteous mobs, then the performative aspect of any philosophy gets quickly twisted into absolutely insane bullshit. I mean, we've seen multiple times in history where the people can go from "throw away your chains and be free" to "murder anyone wearing glasses".

I'm dumb tho. In other news (olds?) have you fellows heard about the Silverman archives? Some dude bought kilos of old photo negatives in China and is publishing them, it's pretty cool. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-02-08/introducing-the-beijing-silvermine-thomas-sauvin-china/13092150 https://www.beijingsilvermine.com/

Hosting the games means free qualification. If not for the Olympics becoming a financial albatross we wouldn't even be talking about the Chinese hockey team.

You say "financial albatross", I hear "opportunity for graft". Look at Sochi. Cost more than all other Winter Olympics combined, yet had unfinished toilets and pothole ridden roads, both of which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Surely the Chinese can out corrupt, and out dodgy-facilities the Russians.

China's Mars rover is attempting to land soon. Given the track record of Mars landings the odds are against it, so far only NASA has been able to manage this (every other mission has either missed Mars entirely, crashed, or there was one Soviet probe that appears to have soft landed but then broke immediately after), but hey. If they succeed on their first attempt that'd be genuinely impressive.
