The internet's given us many great examples of how people isolate themselves into small groups that self-radicalize and rapidly spin into insanity. It was just harder to do pre-internet.

Because genetics is a filthy bougie science and COMRADE LYSENKO has proven that plants, like people, are naturally socialist and as a good member of the party that means he was right.

Real proletariat cannot starve, nor die of exposure. Ergo, those peasants who died in the famine that never happened were not proletariat and therefore deserved the deaths that didn't occur.

When being more ideologically pure means wealth and power and being found to be less ideologically pure means your entire family being murdered by righteous mobs, then the performative aspect of any philosophy gets quickly twisted into absolutely insane bullshit.

I mean, we've seen multiple times in history where the people can go from "throw away your chains and be free" to "murder anyone wearing glasses".

edit: to be fair the article says that part of the problem is that China's hockey talent, such as it is, is largely still too young for the Olympics since they haven't really made a push in hockey until fairly recently.

China is big and stronk. If they don't compete in and win literally everything people will think they are weak and laugh at them

This is of course unacceptable compared to the current strategy, which is for China to try and compete in everything including things it isn't good at, failing, and getting laughed at

You say "financial albatross", I hear "opportunity for graft".

Look at Sochi. Cost more than all other Winter Olympics combined, yet had unfinished toilets and pothole ridden roads, both of which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Surely the Chinese can out corrupt, and out dodgy-facilities the Russians.

China's Mars rover is attempting to land soon. Given the track record of Mars landings the odds are against it, so far only NASA has been able to manage this (every other mission has either missed Mars entirely, crashed, or there was one Soviet probe that appears to have soft landed but then broke immediately after), but hey. If they succeed on their first attempt that'd be genuinely impressive.

Far as I can tell from space twitter China's space agency should know by now, we're just waiting for them to say something about it. In the past they've waited several hours before saying anything in public, even for a successful mission, so who knows.
