Let's go for 8A, the last thing we want is for Santa Elva to end up being captured again, after we just took it back, a city can only be recaptured so many times, before it ends up completely devastated. Not to mention the fact that if the city is recaptured by the enemy, they will cut off the supply lines we need to keep fighting. if they decide to simply attack the city, then the loss of life and damage to infrastructure will demand more of our limited resources and manpower to deal with it, which is not something we can afford. The special forces in the air base are somewhere concerning, but the best they can do is just slow us down in whatever mission they end up in. Most likely they will be trying to defend the jamming system north of them. In short, While not taking down The special forces unit will make a future Mission more difficult, the downsides of not stopping the attack on Santa Elva, far outweighs that difficulty, as well as the time and resources lost if we have to rebuild/take it back again. Not to mention the damage to morale and the fact that we would look like incompetents, Who were only able to capture the city due to luck. (My armchair generals 2 cents.)

The way the briefing video makes it seem, the troops at Kalana Steppes are waiting on reinforcements from the Air Base. Let's take out the air base first, denying the reinforcements to to the Leasath troops. After you take the airbase, then you can clean up the troops. Go for Mission 9A first.

Striking Point Mission 8A: Striking Point – November 15th, 2020 Overview: Leasath forces fleeing from Santa Elva have regrouped at the Kalana Steppes, a desert region north of the city on the way to Sachana Air Base. With additional enemy reinforcements arriving by the hour, Gryphus Squadron heads to the steppes to obliterate the last remaining threat to Santa Elva’s freedom. Guest Commentator: I am joined for this first mission of Part 2 of Ace Combat X by Shinjobi, who still doesn’t do any LPs, so I have nothing to credit for him. Short and sweet, that’s how these things go. KALANA STEPPES Situated north of Santa Elva and south west of Sachana Air Base in Lenal County lies the Kalana Steppes, a rugged desertous region of the Aurelian heartland that was once the home of a pre-industrial native Aurelian population. The stone ruins of an ancient citadel and settlements still dot the arid landscape from the flatlands to the mountains in the north. The increasing desertification of the Kalana Steppes and the development and encroachment of modern Aurelian settlements eventually led to the abandonment of the Kalana fortifications, and the desert has since reclaimed most of the settlement. Now only broken walls and the skeletons of buildings remain, and the Assembly of Nations has proclaimed the region and ANESCO World Heritage Site. Prior to the outbreak of the war between Leasath and Aurelia, the Kalana Steppes were a popular tourist destination, as well as a site of constant archaeological research and excavation. All travel to the region has since been suspended following the outbreak of war. A highway linking Santa Elva to Griswall and Monte Breeze runs through the desert and into the mountains in the north. “Kalana” is a Hawaiian word derived from “Kala-kala” meaning “forgiveness,” but not in the traditional sense of forgiving someone or something from blame or culpability, but as an acknowledgment that all people are flawed and the world is not a perfect place. STRIKING POINT Doing Mission 8A first is presented as the more tactically sound choice, but actually doing Mission 9A first has the more net benefit knock-on effects. You actually have a two mission window to deal with the Leasath forces marshaling on the Kalana Steppes, but only one shot to take out the Scylla Unit at Sachana Air Base before they depart for Mt. Nevera, and possibly elsewhere on the map beyond that. Ignoring Mission 8 twice in a row, by doing Mission 9A and then Mission 11A (In Pursuit I) will result in the Leasath forces gathered there moving to retake Santa Elva with the help of the Hamlet Unit and will unlock the infamous Mission 7C, Time Limit. Time Limit is basically the worst mission in the entire franchise, and if you somehow manage to access it in your run through Ace Combat X then you bald face loving DESERVE to have it foist upon you for your negligence. The good news is that doing Mission 8A locks out 7C from even appearing in your current run of the game, so for the rest of this “timeline” we no longer have to worry about it cursing us with its presence. Later runs will not be so fortunate. If you neglect to do Mission 8A, then Mission 8B (The Wasteland) will become available as an alternate option. More on that when we get to it in the other timeline though.

Alright, it's time to pick the next mission. Santa Elva might be safe from the threat of the Leasath forces on the Kalana Steppes and the Hamlet Unit, but the Scylla Unit has absconded to Mt. Nevera to protect the Nevera Jammer from our eventual attempt to destroy it. We now have two new choices ahead of us, each with their own risks and benefits: Mission 9B - A Diversion: With the Scylla Unit no longer at Sachana Air Base, the element of surprise is lost. Any attempt to retake the base by Aurelia will have to be done out in the open and by brute force. While we won't have to worry about the Scylla Unit bolstering the Leasath numbers, the base will be on high alert and well prepared for any action taken against it. Securing Sachana Air Base will allow us to have more allied support for the eventual assault on Griswall. Mission 10A - Joint Operation: The Leasath military is preparing to airlift a key component of their Meson Cannon system out of Monte Breeze to Griswall. If the transport flight makes it out of the city, Griswall's defenses will be greatly fortified, making the city that much harder to retake. However, Monte Breeze is currently blanketed in radar interference from the Nevera Jammer. A spotter unit from Aurelian military intelligence is on the ground to help co-ordinate the location of the transport planes, but success is still far from assured. Regardless of the cost and benefit of your choice, either option will put us in striking distance of the Nevera Jammer and Mission 11B - In Pursuit II. A Diversion Mission 9B: A Diversion – November 19th, 2020 Overview: Aurelian forces launch an assault on Sachana Air Base to retake it from Leasath control. Although the threat of the Skylla Unit is no longer present, the base is now on high alert for any incursion into its defense zone. The enemy has stationed multiple guerrilla troops armed with rocket propelled grenade launchers in the Raven Woods to shoot down any air units approaching the base. Gryphus Squadron must defend the allied chopper convoy en route to Sachana AFB. Guest Commentator: I am joined for this mission by Lazyfire. He most recently LP’d the PS2 FPS Black. SACHANA AIR BASE Located in the Raven Woods south of Griswall, Sachana Air Base is one of Aurelia’s key military installations and originally home to a large number of fighter squadrons prior to the Leasath invasion. Leasath placed a high priority on its capture and occupation, and stationed their Scylla Special Forces Unit there to ensure the base remained under its control. With Sachana AFB back under allied control, the Aurelian Air Force POWs being held there have been released and the squadrons driven away from it by the Leasath blitz are now filtering back home. Sachana Air Base will be Gryphus Squadron’s home away from from now until the mission to recapture Griswall, and allied forces from Sachana will now bolster the squadron’s ranks with allied support. Sachana Air Base also serves as one of the multiplayer maps in Ace Combat X in addition to the setting for Missions 9A and 9B. The word “sachana” is a derivative pronunciation of “sancana” means “honouring” or “assisting” in Sanskrit. RAVEN WOODS A large forest located northeast of the Kalana Steppes and south of Mt. Nevera, Monte Breeze and Griswall. A large forking river runs through the woods southwards towards Santa Elva and the Aurelian military installation Sachana Air Base lies at the center of the woods. A DIVERSION Mission 9B is the calm before the storm of further into Part 2. It’s probably the more frustrating of the two missions, even with 9A’s radar evasion gimmick. That said, as I point out in the video, the mission is actually far easier than it seems. If even one chopper makes it to Sachana, the mission will be considered a success, and the number of RPG troops hidden in the forest that will actually damage and destroy the allied Chinooks is comparatively low next to the total number they throw at you. The same RPG spawns will always fire a “hit” shot without variation. Each of the five CH-47s you have to protect takes two hits to bring down, and you have a few seconds grace period before the hitting RPG units appear to when they fire their shot. Taking the correct RPG units out will keep the helicopters safe until they make it to the base. Running through the mission and experimenting with which ones are the lethal spawns will help make things easier. From here, our next options are either Missions 10A (Joint Operation), or Mission 11B (In Pursuit II). Doing Mission 11B and destroying the Nevera Jammer will change Mission 10 to Mission 10B (Break In). Which version of Mission 12 you will get at the end of Part 2 is still up in the air at this point however. Medal: Air Guardian Awarded for: Completing Mission 9B with less than 20% damage to allied helicopter units on the MPG. Description: Awarded for keeping allied casualties at Sachana Air Base to a minimum.

In Pursuit II Mission 11B: In Pursuit II – November 23rd, 2020 Overview: In order to conduct further operations unimpeded in Northern Aurelia, Gryphus Squadron launches an attack on the Nevera Jammer, constructed by Leasath at the summit of Aurelia’s highest mountain. Destroying the jammer will end radar interference over the region, however, the Leasath special forces Skylla Unit from Sachana Air Base is present in the mountains and will stop at nothing to protect the jammer. Guest Commentator: I am joined for this mission by the poor bastard who replaced me as moderator of the Let’s Play subforum alongside Sally and Fedule, Danaru! One half of the infamous LP duo of Dan and Grace, Danaru is known sub-forum wide for his very drunk and very gay trainwreck LPs, the most recent of which is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain with an on-site procurement gimmick. He and Grace are also currently LPing Stardew Valley and New Super Mario World 3D. Sadly, now that the Angel Tax has officially concluded, you are all free from his horrible modly wrath unless I come up with a probation gimmick for Ace Combat 7. I’m open to suggestions. MT. NEVERA Situated at the top of a mountain range that forms the spine of the Aurelian heartland, the summit of Mt. Nevera is the highest point in Aurelia and one of the highest mountains in the southern hemisphere. Years ago, the summit was frequent destination for daring mountaineers, amateur and professional alike. However, it was purchased in recent years by the Aurelian government and a large scale weather research and observation station and communications array was constructed atop it. The Nevera Relay allowed Aurelia to maintain its local communications network even as the rest of the world fell victim to the satellite network failure of September 2019. The Aurelian port city of Challwa lies at the foot of Mt. Nevera on the east coast of the country due south of Griswall and Phuku Lagolla Air Base. Since the outbreak of the war with Leasath, the area around Mt. Nevera has been classified as a no fly zone due to heavy Leasath anti-air munitions stationed in the mountains and the radar interference from the Nevera Jammer. All civilian air routes through Northern Aurelia are currently being diverted or restricted so long as the jammer remains operational. Appropriately for a high snowy mountain, “nevera” is Spanish for “refrigerator”. In Ace Combat Xi: Skies of Incursion (which was LP’d by Ashsaber and you can read by following the links right here), Mt. Nevera was misspelled as “Mt. Nevara”–which itself is the imperfect subjunctive form of “nevar” which means “to snow” in Spanish. NEVERA JAMMER The Nevera Jammer is a massive radar and communications jamming installation constructed by the Leasath Army Corps. of Engineers shortly after the fall of Aurelia to Leasath control. Originally a weather and communications array atop Mt. Nevera, Leasath has since modified it into a high-powered radar and radio frequency jammer. With a total output of 4 megawatts, the jammer can block all forms of communication except for short range radio and infrared signals at an effective radius of 1,200 km—an area spanning all of Aurelian ground territory from Monte Breeze on the west coast, to Griswall in the east. Consisting of six cylindrical jamming amplifiers, the Leasath military heavily modified the existing Aurelian technology and has fortified the area around the array with multiple anti-air installations, including an Aegis defense system capable of quickly triangulating a target’s location and annihilating it with a withering barrage of AA fire and surface-to-air missile attacks. The jammer array is powered by ten dedicated electrical power plants, four of which are needed to power the Aegis system surrounding the mountain alone. SKYLLA UNIT The Skylla Special Forces Unit is one of Leasath’s most versatile and dangerous ground-based special forces units. Along with the airborne fortresses Gleipnir and Gandr, the Skylla Unit was instrumental in overwhelming the Aurelian forces during Leasath’s initial bitz invasion in late October. They were assigned to defend the recently captured Sachana Air Base from any attempt by Aurelia to retake it and secure Leasath supremacy in the Aurelian heartland. With the loss of Santa Elva and the Gleipnir, and the obliteration of their ground forces on the Kalana Steppes, Leasath command ordered the Skylla Unit to abandon Sachana Air Base and reinforce their strategic trump card at Mt. Nevera. Taking advantage of the radar interference, they have positioned themselves around the mountain and are able to attack enemy air units from relative safety. Their special forces training and equipment also allow them to adapt to any situation. In this case, their demolition experts have also laid charges on the aging and defunct transmission towers leading to the power plants around the mountain. Destroying the power lines will make it harder for any Aurelian forces to try and locate electrical plants that provide the Nevera Jammer’s defense system with the power needed to operate. Whether or not you actually wipe out the Skylla Unit here in Mission 11B is irrelevant, this is the last time they show up in this run of the game. Doing Mission 8A and Mission 10A before Mission 9 and Mission 11 will result in the Skylla Unit eluding you at both Sachana Air Base and Mt. Nevera, meaning they will show up again at the worst possible time later in Part 2… SCYLLA A callback of sorts to Ace Combat 3’s arc-deciding mission “Scylla and Charybdis”. Skylla is a variant spelling of “Scylla”, the name of a giant sea monster from Greek mythology, often depicted as a hydra-like dragon (Charybdis, in contrast, being an unseen horror at the nadir of a massive whirlpool). The pair of monsters occupied opposite ends of a narrow strait with only a slim path to safety between them. Sailors attempting to steer clear of Charybdis’s maelstrom would pass too close to the rocky cliffs and be devoured by Scylla. Conversely, those attempting to avoid Scylla on the cliffs would drift into Charybdis’s whirlpool and be sucked under the waves and devoured by the monster’s gaping maw. The first appearance of the monstrous duo comes in the Odyssey, where Homer’s long-suffering hero Odysseus has to navigate his ship and crew past them to safety as a part of his ten year journey back to Ithaca after the end of the Trojan War. The phrase “between Scylla and Charybdis” has come to symbolize being forced to choose between two equally dangerous or unpleasant situations or options. The modern take on the concept is the “lesser of two evils”, which is emblematic of the mission structure of Ace Combat X in general. Every choice has a reward and a cost and threading the needle takes skill and insight. Or just replaying the game until you get an outcome you accept as “right” WHACK-A-MOLE The gimmick of this mission (and Mission 11A for that matter) is “destroy the right power plants”. Doing so will power down the defense system protecting the jammer at the center of the map and reduce the jamming frequency precipitously with each correct plant destroyed. There are a total of 10 power plants scattered around the map, four of which are the correct ones to be destroyed, but which ones are the real plants is completely randomized every time. Meaning each plant has a 28.6% chance of being the right one. Luckily, there is an easy metric to discerning which plant is real and which ones are false. The towers on the correct plants will be illuminated by a white signal light, while the false plants will have no such lighting. Each plant destroyed will lower the MPG by 25% and affect the on/off timing ratio of the jamming. With no power plants destroyed, the jamming will be on for 86 seconds, off for 8 seconds on Normal difficulty. With one plant destroyed the jamming duration drops to 46 seconds. Two plants destroyed drops it to 36 seconds. Three plants destroyed is 26 seconds. And with all four plants destroyed the jamming will only affect the radar for 16 seconds with 8 seconds of visibility. These numbers scale with difficulty. On Easy, the radar is visible for 10 seconds with 75/35/25/15/5 seconds of jamming depending on the number of plants destroyed. On Hard and Ace difficulty, you only have 6 seconds of radar visibility interrupted by 107/67/62/57/52 and 123/87/82/77/72 seconds of jamming on each respective difficulty. The Jammer/Power Plant gimmick can be completely obliterated, hilariously, by the ADF-01 FALKEN and its TLS special weapon. The laser on the FALKEN can destroy the Nevera Jammer TGT units from well outside the insta-kill danger zone, completing the mission instantly. IN PURSUIT II Speaking of costs and benefits: Mission 11B. After completing Mission 9B (A Diversion), you will have two options ahead of you, 11B and 10A. Doing Mission 11B first has the lasting benefit of eliminating the Nevera Jammer’s interference from the remaining mission slate ahead of you. However, by passing on Mission 10A (Joint Operation), you lose your chance to stop the MBSR components being developed by Leasath from being shipped from Monte Breeze to Griswall. This means even if you do Mission 10B (Break In) to make sure no further MBSRs make it to the capital, Griswall will be significantly better defended against your attack than it otherwise would have been. Choosing to do Mission 8A (Striking Point) first also comes back to haunt us in this mission, as the Skylla Unit from Sachana Air Base makes their presence felt here by blowing up the power lines you would use as landmarks to guide your way to the power plants you need to take out AND by providing the Leasath ground forces an increased anti-air presence in the area to make your attack runs that much more perilous. From here, our options dwindle significantly. Our only choices ahead of us now are Mission 10B (Break In) and Mission 12B (Atmos Ring). Since 12B is the finale of this run of Part 2, and we’re not leaving any missions on the table in this LP, our only choice now is 10B, and… hoo boy, get ready.

Break In Mission 10B: Break In – November 24th, 2020 Overview: With the Nevera Jammer offline, Gryphus Squadron reroutes to the industrial city of Monte Breeze to stop Leasath from airlifting anymore MBSR units to Griswal. However, they are not the only forces in the area looking to retake Monte Breeze for Aurelia... Guest Commentator: I am joined for this mission by the perfect possible expert to turn to on the subject of trainloads of hooligans drunkenly riding the rails looking for things to tear the gently caress up, the Mad Welshman himself, JaimieTheD! MONTE BREEZE The industrial city of Monte Breeze lies on the northwest coast of Aurelia, at the foot of the mountain range that spans the Aurelian heartland to Challwa and Griswall and includes Mt. Nevera. The city is Aurelia’s industrial and manufacturing core, and prior to the war its factories pumped out all manner of technological exports both mundane and marvelous for in Aurelia’s infrastructure and around the world. Monte Breeze is also surrounded by vast stretches of lush farmland starting at the mountain foothills and is a major hub for the Aurelian railway network that connects the country over land along with its highway system. Monte Breeze’s location on the coast and in the shadow of the mountains gives the city a frequently rainy climate making it ideal for farming of all sorts. In the months since the Leasath invasion, the city’s manufacturing sector has been re-purposed by Diego Navarro’s military-industrial fraud enterprise and cranks out weaponry to enhance the both the Leasath war machine and Navarro’s bottom line. Among these weapons and weapon components being produced are parts for a weapon known as the Meson Cannon that has been deployed in Griswall to fortify the city against any attempt to retake it. Recently, development in Monte Breeze has been focused on creating as many MBSRs (Meson Beam Stabilizing Regulators) as possible to enhance the Meson Cannon’s capabilities. AURELIAN LIBERATION CORPS Known as the ALC for short, the Aurelian Liberation Corps is a group of interconnected and independent civilian resistance cells and militia groups who have formed in the vacuum of official authority or military presence in Northern Aurelia. Their mission has been to disrupt all Leasath military operations to the best of their abilities, but have lacked the manpower and equipment to conduct proper paramilitary actions against Leasath until recent. The goal of ALC, as stated in its very name, is the complete liberation of Aurelia from Leasath control and restoration of its rightful government to power. Though their efforts are commendable, unfortunately they tend to make things more difficult for Gryphus Squadron than if they weren’t around given their wild card nature, as Gryphus 1 has to focus on keeping the ALC members safe and out of harms way because they’re ultimately just civilians trying to take on the might of the Leasath war machine. The ALC will show up a second time in Ace Combat X in Mission 12C (Wild Card), though the ironic part of that is there’s no actual continuity or connective tissue between their two appearances in the game. The routes you have to take to unlock either Missions 10B or 12C are mutually exclusive. So each time you meet the ALC in game, it is technically the first time as far as the game is concerned. MBSR The Meson Beam Stabilizing Regulator (MBSR) is a key component of Leasath’s new particle superweapon, the Meson Cannon. The MBSRs are amplification and stabilization units designed to augment the Atmos Ring, the particle accelerator ring that encircles downtown Griswall. When inserted into key positions around the Atmos Ring, the MBSRs solves the problem of the rapid decay of meson particles into muons by trapping the accelerated proton beams generated by the Atmos Ring into a non-neutral plasma state away from the accelerator and then running these “enriched” particle beams through a high energy charged particle condenser. The enriched protons produced from this process then create a steadier stream of mesons which in turn decay into a steady beam of muons, which are then fired by the Meson Canon. The MBSR allows the Meson Canon to then fire a more concentrated singular directed energy beam for longer and at a higher power threshold than it otherwise would be capable of, producing a result of similar scope to the Gründer Industries Tactical Laser System but much more powerful in application. BREAK IN Despite my complaints about the ALC in the commentary and their hooligan shenanigans, I actually like Break In. It’s a fun scramble mission with a neat twist in the middle and if you take the right plane for it, you can easily stay well ahead of the train and well as getting the Named Ace and the Star Unit all at the same time. From here, there’s only one mission left on this path through Part 2: Mission 12B, Atmos Ring. Once we’re done with that, we’ll go back and run through the “good” timeline run of Part 2 before finally moving on to Part 3 and the endgame. We’ll also visit the “you deserve this” disaster missions of 7C and 12C in there somewhere too. Get ready.

The C is the regular carrier version. Which is fine, if you like that sort of thing.

The way to go is either the Assault Horizon Legacy route, but there's no real viable handheld system to remake it on at the moment. Or include it as a freebie extra in any remake or remaster of 04/5/Zero just to get it in front of as many potential eyeballs as possible if such a thing was to be done. As it stands, I think the only way people are going to ever experience it any more is through emulation.

This is the lightbulb going off in my head and realizing that cont. ship was container ship. I guess in the heat of gameplay I never really thought about it but I just never put it all together.
