Just went to check out a nice 6k mile 2019 Golf Alltrack S at a dealer. Hasn't been through the shop and had a price set yet, but the sales manager said they would probably price it at $27k. If not a little more. With their bullshit "mandatory" processing fee, I think that's more than sticker when it was new.

It amazes me that Golf Rs not only held their value, but have increased in price and are basically impossible to find at least around me. The ones that get listed on Carvana are sold almost right away. I love my GTI, but an AWD version would be so nice to have.

I brought my 2011 a4 avant into an actual german car mechanic, just wanted to ask about two things they said that needed to be addressed: brake fluid system flush replace OEM magnetic cam total cost was 150 and 1080 respectively. does this seem reasonable? for the latter they mentioned something about oil starting to drip and it could get on the belt, causing major issues, if I don't get it fixed. it looks like there are several parts involved for the second item magnet update (?) housing connector camshaft seal outer timing cover gasket camshaft adjuster ma... (cut off but I assume magnet?)

So the previous owner of my car spent way too much on kinda dumb carbon fiber exterior accessories. Since I've had the car, so about 4 years, I've noticed the clearcoat getting worse and worse on these side mirror housings.  I decided yesterday to look into refinishing them because I had nothing else to really get done and was feeling adventurous. I ended up using 400, 800, 1200 grit sandpaper to take down the clearcoat, and reapplied 3-4 layers of a gloss UV-resistant clearcoat:  I'm waiting for 4-5 more hours today for it to be a full 24hours, then will wetsand/polish with 3000 grit and reinstall. It wasn't the hardest thing in the world although I didn't impress my partner by spraying clearcoat in the living room of our apartment. Besides those, he also bought carbon fiber eyelid things which I didn't really mind the look of - however after one front corner of my car had some bodywork done, the piece fell off of one side. It left a pretty ugly amount of resin/epoxy on the top of the headlight which is visible slightly even with the hood down so I've ordered some other ones for 1/4 the price that look exactly the same as the OSIR ones. The plan is to confirm they look identical and to replace the one that's missing so I'm not staring at the epoxy on the headlight housing. I've got noob wheel questions if I could please? Part of getting a GTI in white was to get white wheels to go along - changed my mind into thinking it was too much of a kid toy car look but I'm back to thinking it's a cool idea seeing white Rotiform RSEs on one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIecxhnEt-U. Wish there was more footage of driving it around, bummer. I don't know how wheel pricing works and I'm in no rush at all so wondering the 'best' way to try and buy them - if there's a good way to watch for them to be on sale, or if that's even much of a thing, has COVID jacked everything up that I should just chill on the idea for 6+ months, if I'm open to used is it worth trying to look at Ebay or Craigslist or anything (I'm assuming not)? For the OEM wheels I don't drive in snow so don't see a need to keep them and hope I could get some cash to help recoup cost - uhh ebay? Craigslist or FB marketplace? Local wheel store kind of places I see on FB? Or depending on how much I may get for them, and if I'm hoping to do some track driving some day, maybe better just to keep them to put track tires on to swap for track days?

I don't really buy into the idea of a "sporty" SUV and looking at the Audi website the Q5 interior is significantly nicer than the Porsche. I guess the brand differentiation is Porsche = sport focused with a bit of luxury and Audi = luxury with a bit of sport. I'd take a Q5 and a bunch of money over a Macan. Or more likely a Kodiak and an old Boxster.

Second opinion: When I was last at my German car specialist mechanic, they were charging $90/hour for labor (in a cheap place to live), so $150 for a brake fluid flush also seems reasonable to me.

in regards to my oil leak issue, the second place (who will look at it soon) did say that over time the oil can leak onto whatever belt controls the alternator and such, not sure what it's called (timing belt?) seems like the issue is often the camshaft seal becoming worn down over time I have also read that another symptom of this issue can be rough idling, and my vehicle definitely has some of that! actionjackson fucked around with this message at 02:55 on May 15, 2021 |

That makes a lot more sense to me. Sounds like it’s the serpentine belt that gets covered in oil, at least once it’s gets real bad. I’m no Audi expert, but it does seem to fit what you’re describing.

Definitely going to defer to what the mechanics have to say on it, but if a leak from a seal is getting oil onto your serpentine belt it's definitely worth addressing sooner than later. FWIW, that's a V6 Audi in the diagram. I'm not sure whether or not yours but if it is, I think they'd call that a balance shaft. It helps to smooth the timing chain's motion with its counterweights. I was under the impression it's the I4 2.0T, and if that's the case, I think you're looking at part 18 in the diagram here: https://parts.audiusa.com/a/Audi_20...IN/F201030.html In either case, it's not going to be a cheap repair, but it's one you want done well and diagnosed properly.
