Any recommendations for jawdropping catchy riffs for the Judas Priest / Mercyful Fate / etc enthusiast? I guess more rock 'n roll influence in the mix?

More arena rock, hair metal has a bad rep but stuff from def Leppard, skid row, firehouse or lion have those big catchy arena riffs that are loving amazing, in between all the power ballads.

And finally while not being Priest/Fate-ish, I always think of this song for catchy riffing:

Nice, thanks for the riffs! No doubt that Running Wild and Transformers the movie theme rock hard.

And I love J-rock/metal of the 80s and whatnot, big Seikima-II and Make-Up fan etc. Always in the mood for that scene. That Hideaki riffage is sweet for sure. With some good keyboard in the mix too, like a Rainbow in the Dark, always nice.

I love Loudness so much. They are probably my favorite Japanese metal band after Anthem. Anthem are the metal gods of Japan. Bound to Break is an excellent album, total Judas Priest worship of the highest order.

Apparently this one is for all the motherfuckers who like hard rock

(Not exactly a similar sound to Priest or KD, but these guys do have some crazy catchy simple riffs if you're into a doomier kinda trad metal sound)

I've been on a huge Anthem kick lately! That their current singer, Yukio Morikawa, seems to have spent two full decade between his Anthem stints not recording metal albums is a crime. In every live video I've seen of him since his return in 2014, his ability to straddle the line between gurgling razor blades and singing powerful, clean vocal lines at almost 60 has really impressed me.

They did a cool Pumpkins United-style anniversary show a few years ago where their old demo vocalist, their mid-80s (including Bound to Break) and 2000-2014 vocalist, and Yukio ('88-92ish, 2014-now) all performed mini Anthem sets individually and together. I do think they made the right decision in cutting "Tony" loose after the demo...

I remember back when I was first getting into metal (mid 90s) I was laughing my rear end off at Mercyful Fate/King Diamond - primarily "Melissa" and thinking this sucks. Now...? I worship him - just so loving good. I hope I can see him before he calls it quits. He almost came to town but hosed up his back and cancelled. And when he went to Minneapolis in 2019 it was the weekend of my wedding so...

Fingers crossed.

I've seen the last two King Diamond tours: the one where he played all of Abigail + a set of miscellaneous Mercyful Fate/other King Diamond songs, and the tour after that with Uncle Acid, and they were both loving awesome. He sounds awesome and the band is tight as hell.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one to Flavortown, and that has made all the difference.

King Diamond’s last tour was legit great. I had been hoping to see the Mercyful Fate reunion but I don’t think that’s happening now.

But yeah, Kull sounds more like Black Moon Broods Over Lemuria era Bal-Sagoth, and this new Wizardthrone track sounds ripped straight off of Battle Magic. I think one of the synth parts in this is actually the same as in like "When Rides the Scion of the Storms".
