I have a dream to have my own cake business, but cakes-by-post is difficult and the number of little local cafes and bakeries that have opened and almost immediately closed is enough to put me right off.

I can do flavoured gin, either to sell or to drown my sorrows as I spend another 30 years commuting to the office.

I went to an ice cream shop in ediburgh once that did sage flavoured ice cream.

It tasted like eating stuffing but with the texture and temperature of ice cream.

It wasn't necessarily unpleasant either it was just extremely existentially unsettling.

Flavoured gin is both amazing and seems hugely popular right now- why not do as I did, start small selling to the good people of UKMT while you hone your skills and gain experience, and level up gradually until suddenly you realise that it’s paying all your bills?

Just a quick wee post about the discord.

We've spotted a few people leaving, and leaving unannounced.

It's not an airport, nobodies departure needs to be declared, but I'd just like to check in and make sure there's no issues that are going un-reported.

Please contact me on Discord, I'm mehall # 7777 (I don't think you need to add me to DM me, but you can DM me on here if there's issues, I'm just less likely to check on here regularly these days)

If anyone who has left of their own volition wishes to return, you're always welcome to do so too.

For those unfamiliar, discord.gg/RgUqEwk takes you to the official unofficial UKMT Discord server.
If it's your first time, you need to auth with the bot to confirm you are actually a goon, so we can check out your rap sheet and stuff, just as a spammer/culture fit check type thing, and agree to our code of conduct, we'd love to have you if you're a regular here.
We have near 600 total users, of whom I'd probably guess around 70-80 are frequently active, with others checking in/semi-lurking and contributing when they want, etc etc.

Anybody know anything about the prevalence of covid denial and anti-vax sentiment among the British Polish community? My brother's wife and mother-in-law are pretty heavily into covid denialism, and even subscribe to some of the more interesting 'vaccines and microchips' type conspiracy theories. My brother has going along with this out of fear of losing his bedroom priveledges, but I suspect he'll probably just go out and get vaccinated in secret. His theory is that it's due to a leftover mistrust of government authority figures from Soviet times, and that covid-denialism is more widespread amongst them as a result..

It's more likely for the same reasons that belief that Hilary Clinton eats babies and murdered the Pope is high among some older Hispanic American communities, because Qbrain bullshit is even harder to fact check when it's not in the main language, and there's few authoritative news sources specifically for the community (and in this case actual Poland's actual government is full of alt-right edgelord dickheads who would gleefully amplify it for profit/lulz).

This is an excellent point and one I've had bitter arguments about with people both left and right. So much writing about the Holocaust and genocide in general is based on the idea that either there was a unique cruelty on the part of the group carrying out the atrocities or that some once-in-a-lifetime charismatic leader hypnotised otherwise lovely people into murdering their neighbours.

The lesson you should learn is that this poo poo can happen anywhere, at any time, the moment you start viewing any group as less deserving of basic rights. It's one of the few times that the slippery slope argument is absolutely 100% true - the moment you start legislating that one group is inferior to another it's a really short, and extremely steep, path to genocide.

I think the best lesson to learn from it is when Thomasin McKenzie is talking to Scarlett Johanson about JoJo.
She says that he's a Nazi, she says he's just a ten year old boy. All he wants to do is go to a club and hang around with others.

And I think that's one of the best things to take into account. The idea of fascism being a seductive group that looks for people who are feeling isolated. They aren't the main target, but that is how they get their numbers up.

Going way back but I got around to figuring this out. I just added an RSS extension to my browser (EasyRSS), and then you put the URL of each Youtube channel in the format

code:
https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=UCBa659QWEk1AI4Tg--mrJ2A
Where the bit after the = sign is the channel's ID number that you see in the URL of the channel's Home page.

Now I can get the perfect Youtube experience - a little number tells me there's a new video, and I can go and watch it without logging in, or seeing comments or suggestions. This has made me disproportionately happy :)

Do it, but don't get a shop. A friend's sister has a roaring kitchen business making about 40 cakes a week for everything from birthdays to weddings. It's been built by word of mouth and because it's a special occasion sort of thing, the customers seem happy to call round to pick up the goods rather than expecting delivery. Worst case, you'll finish up with a load of commercial kitchen hardware that can go on ebay.

If you do want to get premises, there's a nest of hipsters near me running a bakery out of a shop the size of a wardrobe who have a very cunning grift- don't put up a menu. As they painstakingly explain the choice to every customer, a big queue forms which draws in even more crowds. It also means, and this is the really clever bit, that customers only realise at point of sale that the two pain au chocolat they've waited 20 starving minutes for is going to cost six loving quid.

I've hardly been in the discord but I haven't left (well not knowingly anyway!)
Rolling conversations are not my forte.

As I've said before, I prefer the words to stay still until I'm ready to receive them.

This is also why I do not join any whatsapp groups other than, very rarely, 2 or 3 friends we'll make a short-lived group to make a specific arrangement.

(Not just written words, but in pubs and so on, I find the noise of numerous conversations going on around me too much 'sensory overload'.)

UBI - surely it COULD be fairly straightforward.

Almost everyone has a national insurance number of which the HMRC /DWP are aware and an associated bank account of some sort.
Just pay the £whatever per week into those accounts.

And if two people have a shared account, well 2 lots will go in to it.

Or, give people the option to have a separate bank account (maybe even just their NI number in something like the Post Office) with credits in that can be accessed via the PO or an atm card or whatever.

And if "they" insist on an app, then kindly provide everyone with the latest phone for free that can work the wretched app (or make sure it will work on Android 3, Ipad 9.3, windows laptops, linux laptops, iCrap and so on.)

This will leave some people who do not have a bank account which will need to be addressed, and also people who have specific additional needs (disability, carers, attendance etc).

I made Seitan... and it was good.

Used the washed flour method: flour + water = big ball of dough, i let it soak for 18 hours then rinsed all the starch out(i'm not so good at making pancakes out of the starch as it acts like cornflour).

This following bit is all to give it texture & flavour so you can skip this involved bit if you want to:
Kneaded it then stretched it out, cut into cubes, mixed in herbs & spices i had about then kneaded it again, cut into strips and braided it together and soaked again for 2 hours followed by a final stretch and tying it into a lot of knots and forming it into a tight ball.

Simmer for 90minutes in stock of your choice and let rest over night to toughen up.

Eat as is or flour & shallow fry for something nice.

As long as you don't have to rely on the post which in parts of the UK including Walthamstow (Creasy land) is highly unreliable.
We used to spend Saturday evenings re-delivering all the wrongly delivered post to adjoining streets.
I took a huge pile of wrongly-delivered mail up to the sorting office once and had a tantrum.
A week later, I received an apology letter 'this will never happen again' and a book of stamps as compensation.
Yes, you guessed it, this particular letter was delivered through my letter box at midnight on a Saturday by a friendly neighbour to whom it had been delivered in error.
