There are some Muslim jurists (particularly of the Hanafi school) who take the concept of khamr literally and forbid only grape-based (or date-based) alcoholic beverages, allowing those made with other fruits, grains, or honey. This is, however, a minority opinion.[5][6]

The Primary Chronicle reports that in the year 987, after consultation with his boyars, Vladimir the Great sent envoys to study the religions of the various neighboring nations whose representatives had been urging him to embrace their respective faiths. The result is described by the chronicler Nestor. Of the Muslim Bulgarians of the Volga the envoys reported there is no gladness among them, only sorrow and a great stench.[14] He also reported that Islam was undesirable due to its taboo against alcoholic beverages and pork.[22] Vladimir remarked on the occasion: "Drinking is the joy of all Rus'. We cannot exist without that pleasure."[22] Ukrainian and Russian sources also describe Vladimir consulting with Jewish envoys and questioning them about their religion, but ultimately rejecting it as well, saying that their loss of Jerusalem was evidence that they had been abandoned by God.

His emissaries also visited pre-schism Latin Rite Christian and Eastern Rite Christian missionaries.[citation needed] Ultimately Vladimir settled on Eastern Christianity. In the churches of the Germans his emissaries saw no beauty; but at Constantinople, where the full festival ritual of the Byzantine Church was set in motion to impress them, they found their ideal: "We no longer knew whether we were in heaven or on earth", they reported, describing a majestic Divine Liturgy in Hagia Sophia, "nor such beauty, and we know not how to tell of it." Vladimir was impressed by this account of his envoys.[14]

The cynical answer is that we're 100 years past the beginning of the "common ruin of the contending classes" timeline. If we're not just gonna lay down and die, the big problem is that capital managed to weather the crises of the early 20th century while its main rival in the USSR failed; and the temporary high of capital's success in the mid century followed by the collapse of the Soviet Union helped destroy Marxist class consciousness in the Western working class, probably accelerated by the atomization of western communities. It seems like the way forward is trying to rekindle class consciousness as an identification of "why are things hosed up" and trying to limit the damage we do to the decolonized world

As far as ISIS goes, I would argue it didn’t really have much in to do with Iraq or Islam itself beyond the fact that the Saudis gave a ton of money to the most extreme lunatics they could find that happened to be in Iraq at the time. I guess you could make a comparison with Lenin on a boarded up train except that the Bolsheviks were already a established faction and actually had a clear political program while ISIS just exists to cause as much damage as possible. ISIS is like if you gave the most washed up extremist Orthodox reactionaries you could find on the side of the road and started living them heavy equipment.

As far as predictive power, I don’t think Marxism is a “hard science” and shouldn’t be treated as such. It is a mode to view economics, history, and social relations. It useful sometimes and less useful other times in my opinion.

Just loling here that someone convinced FA that "cretin" is ablist:

quote:

1779, from French crétin (18c.), from Alpine dialect crestin, "a dwarfed and deformed idiot" of a type formerly found in families in the Alpine lands, a condition caused by a congenital deficiency of thyroid hormones. The word is of uncertain origin. By many it has been identified with Vulgar Latin *christianus "a Christian," a generic term for "anyone," but often with a sense of "poor fellow." Related: Cretinism (1796).

Oh no, he might have insulted a group of people from 200 years ago by using a term which includes them in the human and Christian community.

Literally a term that was used to remind the user and listener that those affected were still human like everyone else, lol.

The exact same individuals who once supported the secular Hussein government, including his own daughter, are now on the side of IS. Caliph Ibrahim's deputies in charge of the Syrian and Iraqi portions of IS are both former military officers from the Hussein era. The people have not changed. Material reality has; because it is impossible to defeat the United States as a secular socialist government, they must do it as mujahideen.

I mean this just points to opportunism, doesn’t it? fighting imperialism by becoming IS speaks to wanting power more than a principled stand against Western imperialism, especially given the horrendous poo poo they intend to force upon people in the eventual absence of liberal democratic capitalism

like, the reason there aren't any secularists and/or socialists left in the Middle East anymore is that reactionaries shot them all, usually by painting them as being Moscow-stooges first
