Ford has filed a patent for new in-car software that would deliver 'pop-up' advertising on in-car infotainment systems, official documents reveal.

Dubbed 'billboard interface' by the American manufacturer, the patent filing – which was lodged in 2016 but only became public earlier this month – says the technology would be capable of "obtaining, via a camera, an image of a billboard and identifying, via a processor, a segment of that image."

It would then relay further information about the promoted product to the occupants of the car, and offer to reroute the journey to find out more or visit a related store.

God damnit, why didn't any of us think of and patent this kind of poo poo, then either refuse to license it at all or do so at a crazy high price and use the money for a good cause?

If this is basically patenting the idea of having a car advertise to you based on qr codes or cuecat barcodes on billboard artwork I've got bad news for them, I own a rope and can make goatse qr codes and don't mind trespassing on billboards to make this happen.

Considering this is the industry where one time some dudes bricked a Jeep with a cellular connection, I can only imagine the security on this application will be absolutely top notch no-expense-spared and there's no way you could use it to gently caress the car and driver over completely.

Terrible car stuff is what's happened to the Ute market in Australia now that you can't buy new ones any more.

I've got a saved search that I check in on from time to time as I wanna get one of these guys and bring it up here to Milwaukee in a few years time to satisfy my Aussie ex-pat bogan desires. But it's looking like I may need to buy one sooner rather than later and park it up at a mate's for a few years, because poo poo's getting out of hand. It's getting hard to find one without tacky poo poo rims...

Finding that a lot of the survivors are like this one - modded to hell and back - and while this one at least appears to have been done well it's completely hosed the vehicle up from the standpoint of "being a useful ute" because the bed's loving carpeted now.

Why the gently caress would you move the gas filler to the bed? Why the gently caress would you put the goddamned Pontiac front-end and badge on a Holden? Why would you put those lovely stripes or... argh.

This one's the dream buy though. Correct transmission, correct color (Tiger Mica), low (enough) miles, reasonably priced, clearly owned by someone who has cared for it. Someone else buy this.

It'd have enough mass to t-bone cars at the next intersection along.

9046lbs works out to 4103kg which would put it in a category here that means it would probably have to be electronically limited to a max of 60mph and you'd need a special license to actually drive one on the roads.

Sort of also interesting taking into account what the GVWR on a 9000lb vehicle will be listed as. Would make registration a tad more painful in certain states.

UTE Stuff

There is a company that sells them in the US converted from old Pontiac's which are Holden's underneath. They start in the mid 30s when I looked a few months ago. Basically they take a Pontiac G8 (I think) and a salvage UTE from Oz and graft them together so it has the Pontiac VIN and then use a form available in a few states to change what the vehicle is called on the title so it becomes a 2005 Holden UTE. This video goes over the process https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjTOEX-qJB8

Yeah I've seen those guys - based out of Colorado I think. But I want a RHD ute - I miss shifting with my left hand :)

I have considered asking them if they can do only the necessary compliance mods and leave a vehicle as RHD since the VE+ (MY 2007) series Commodores were designed for global markets from the get-go so hopefully the body/hard points/crash points are already near US compliant (there's something to do with the fuel tank, something to do with airbag sensors, and I'm sure other bits and pieces I don't know about) but I figure I'll wait to ask them until I've got all my cash together.
