Maybe I don't want to know what Smaug's lair looks like before seeing the finished film. (Bad example because it was poo poo). Shrek is good. The animation looks pretty dated now but out of all the possible criticisms the Guardian went with "it looks bad compared to today's animated films" and "it doesn't respect the original incredibly dull, played out and sexist fairytales it parodys".

Personally I like seeing trailers for comedy films. Because 99% of comedy films are aggressively terrible, but a blind guy throwing darts will hit a couple of bullseyes, so you can just watch the trailer & see all the good jokes in like 90 seconds.

Shrek 1 is a good movie but its CGI has aged quite poorly. I'm also a sucker for a good trailer. The Dune trailer has me beyond hyped, but then that is Villeneuve so it's just obviously going to be one of the best films of the decade. The guy can't make anything but 10/10 incredible works of art and entertainment.

Shrek is bad, actually. There are plenty valid things to hate on Disney for, but centering the whole movie on swiping at its particular brand of optimism with cynicism is the laziest possible Gen-X move and one that was played out long before Shrek was released. It's like, over here are all the things you could be saying, but instead it settles with "Disney, amirite" *Dreamworks face* Pisses me off when my generation sees cynicism as an end unto itself, like, you've pointed out that Disney has flaws, you've shot the fish in the barrel, you've torn something down, but now what? Are you going to put something up in its place we can take to heart or just play Smash Mouth and mug for the camera? Thank gently caress for millenial optimism.

Here's my inflammatory hot take I think the world needs creative effort and freedom putting into new IPs, but we're not going to get that for as long as people keep buying anything called Star Wars. I'd like to see the media diversify, similar to how Netflix has almost achieved with serial television, so that there aren't central show names dominating any particular art form (like Star Wars or Dungeons and Dragons). That way media can choose to cater to extremes and niches with individual pieces, instead of trying to create a handful of dominating stories for everyone. Among the many artistic benefits is a political one: It would allow an armistice in certain "theaters" of the culture wars, by proposing a self determination for the territory, instead of an endless fight for total hegemony within the few central names. In other words, providing enough options for, "if you don't like it, you don't have to watch it," to be practicable.
