E: on the trailer surprise point though, I will pretty much completely avoid any trailer for a movie I'm looking forward to. Less about being spoiled on specific plot points (which happens all the time), but trailers will usually use some of the most beautiful/dramatic shots in the movie, and I'd rather just experience that for the first time in the context of the whole movie, rather than have a voice in my head going "oh yeah this is cool, just like in the trailer".

Basically I wanna get to see DUNC in the cinema without previewing any giant sandworms

Doesn't help that trailers are in the business of both spoiling and misrepresenting a movie, and running the dumbest jokes into the ground.

I miss cinema audiences. There are some film moments that are just so much better when you're in a room full of people reacting with you. The noise the cinema made when we saw Bart Simpson's penis has stuck with me so much more than anything in the actual movie. Or the confused laughter when Howard the Duck appears in Gardians of the Galaxy.

Oh god no. The people in the cinema are the worst part! I used to go during odd times to minimise the amount of people if I could help it. I went for the video and audio quality only.

And yeah, movie trailers suck and spoil everything. I sit on my phone while they happen.

I hate trailers that feel like a showreel of the important scenes and locations. Maybe I don't want to know what Smaug's lair looks like before seeing the finished film. (Bad example because it was poo poo).

If I had my way trailers wouldn't show any footage from after the first half hour of the film.

Its a cartoon comedy film with a song and some fourth wall breaking humour. Can you elaborate on what joke you're reffering to as a 'missing reel'? I feel like the movie had self aware jokes all the way through?

Oh I'm an absolute sucker for a good trailer. Especially short teaser ones that are more about tone and mood than anything else. Like the Prometheus trailer that brings back the Alien sirens (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFfhttZYoEw) , the GotG one with Hooked on a Feeling mashed up with dramatic battle music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d96cjJhvlMA). Heck, the Brightburn trailer that's constantly riffing on Superman is better than the movie itself (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6eB0JT1DI4). Hook that poo poo right into my veins.

Because 99% of comedy films are aggressively terrible, but a blind guy throwing darts will hit a couple of bullseyes, so you can just watch the trailer & see all the good jokes in like 90 seconds.

Shrek 1 is a good movie but its CGI has aged quite poorly. Shrek 2 is a worse and more mainstream movie, but it also looks better and has that fun castle storming sequence at the end.

Shrek 3 is abject garbage and where people started really hating the franchise IMO

Comedy trailers also have my number one pet peeve - adding an artificial reaction shot to a joke/wacky thing from a random scene in the film. Especially if the reaction is another character laughing, as if they're laughing at the great joke. It's insulting.

Kids film trailers are doubly guilty of this. It's the worst.

Shrek is bad, actually. There are plenty valid things to hate on Disney for, but centering the whole movie on swiping at its particular brand of optimism with cynicism is the laziest possible Gen-X move and one that was played out long before Shrek was released. It's like, over here are all the things you could be saying, but instead it settles with "Disney, amirite" *Dreamworks face*

Pisses me off when my generation sees cynicism as an end unto itself, like, you've pointed out that Disney has flaws, you've shot the fish in the barrel, you've torn something down, but now what? The trailer for Watchmen was pretty impressive at the time, whatever you think of the rest of the film though mostly because of the song choice:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdiHDzT6YbQ

(Smashing Pumpkins - The End is the Beginning is the End)

I also liked Prometheus for the audiovisual spectacle personally. Yes there were huge plotholes, but the second time I watched it in 2d rather than 3d it looked so much better. I got a massive headache and had to leave halfway through the 3D viewing from trying to focus on backgrounds that were blurred as an artistic, depth of field choice.

I am so excited for dunc times, but also am trying not to build my hype up too much. I have always found that keeping my expectations low usually helps stave off the disappointment of overhype.

And is now in a situation of being brickwalled by 119 saying they will only book her AZ and giving her an appointment at boots who only has AZ the NHS online booking site does not have the local big center listed where they can do Pfizer. And her gp claims there is not a way for them to get her an appointment booked. Thanks.

There was someone at one of the sites I was at with the opposite problem (bad reaction to Pfizer, wanted AZ) and she was told to just turn up the next Monday when they were going to be doing AZ first shots and they'd put her through as a walk-in. I suspect this might have to do with the helpfulness of the particular people on the front desk though, rather than official policy, but it's worth a try.

Here's my inflammatory hot take

I think the world needs creative effort and freedom putting into new IPs, but we're not going to get that for as long as people keep buying anything called Star Wars.

I'd like to see the media diversify, similar to how Netflix has almost achieved with serial television, so that there aren't central show names dominating any particular art form (like Star Wars or Dungeons and Dragons). That way media can choose to cater to extremes and niches with individual pieces, instead of trying to create a handful of dominating stories for everyone. Among the many artistic benefits is a political one: It would allow an armistice in certain "theaters" of the culture wars, by proposing a self determination for the territory, instead of an endless fight for total hegemony within the few central names. In other words, providing enough options for, "if you don't like it, you don't have to watch it," to be practicable.

Shrek 1's story is actually pretty racist, basically saying that two different races can't possibly have a relationship, and "fixing" it by making the white beautiful princess turn out to secretly be black an ogre. To be fair, this was rectified in the sequel.

Fundamentally, the film is ego-trip from a millionaire impotently complaining about the corporation that dumped him and the other millionaire who runs it.

Bobby Deluxe
May 9, 2004

Right, but how many of those films were edited to make them fit a more profitable structure? How many more might there be if they weren't thrown out in the greenlight stage for not seeming likely to fit that mould?

It's less that films are trying to emulate one particular film, and more that films are trying to emulate a more and more narrowly defined formula so as to maximise profits.

The problem is that companies (and by extension the films they make) can't be allowed to just make enough money, they have to make the absolute maximum money possible and then somehow keep that number increasing year on year. Which incentivises this kind of max profit motive.
