GT sport doesn’t really have a single player like the old ones did.

It’s focus is on multiplayer, but it’s multiplayer is really, really good after you get out of the lower ranks of SR

I’ve got a couple hundred hours into it and I love it, but single player ain’t where it’s at with GT Sport

If you select 25% race duration the race will be like 12 ~ 14 laps with mandatory pitting but ye, all the cars will be doing soft - medium because the tires will be fine. If you want the pit strategy to have an impact you will need to run 50% races which will be around 25 laps indeed.

I don't mind the practice things, makes sense to me. Those objectives are tied to your career and they all make sense when it comes to practicing for a race. I guess the track acclimatization one could be beneficial outside of that though, but meh.

Totally agree on the AI though, it is horrible. Sure they get fast when you turn them up but they always stay horrible and do not care about the player. The mirrors are also worthless as you say and it can be tricky to know where they are exactly.

But the dumbest things in this game is all in multiplayer. Just now I joined a ranked session and it was already in progress, so I wait, it gets finished and I get to the end of the session screen. I get 0 exp since no laps driven but I lose a ton of safety rating? Apparently spectating is very unsafe. But the penalty system and poo poo is dumb too, people voted for Italy, which has the long straight into the chicane. So you need to break very hard to make the chicane. Obviously someone rams me, which made me shoot forward. I got a penalty for obvious corner cutting straight away and illegal overtakes so I had to give the positions back. And my safety rating got lowered at the end of the race.

I like driving around in F1 cars, but ye, the racing is pretty bad in both single- and multiplayer mode.

Dude?
All the F1 tracks are available as high quality mods (conversions of the codemasters assets usually) and there are very good F1 car mods ($3-6 I think) for Assetto Corsa. The AI isn’t fantastic but it’s “fine”. Better than the codemasters games. The only thing missing is a “career mode” but it does have race weekend modes so you can do practice, qualifying, and race. You can even set up whole seasons.

Good luck without a wheel though.

So I got sucked into iRacing on the 1 year deal as well. Last time I tried it I just hosed around on ovals but this time I've just been doing the MX-5. I got into Class D and have no idea what might be worth buying, and given the price of things I've been putting off doing anything new.

I've heard skippy is a popular series thats worth getting since its 1 car. I wish it was easier to tell which tracks are needed for a series (especially since there are bulk discounts?). Is there another series thats a must buy for Class D? Seems like there's a lot of dead series still running that I shouldn't waste money on.

You and everyone else should look at the iRacing Buyers Guide, plug in what series you're racing in, what tracks you own and it'll spit out a list of what's coming up and you don't already own. Really the Skip is The Car for D class road racing and the one everyone recommends as a first car purchase.

Skips are less popular than they used to be, it's F3 for single seater and GT3/GTE for GTs that really pull the numbers these days. Skips still fill their splits though so if they're specifically your thing don't be put off. They're just not THE series anymore.

I mean I still got a 4 split race at 11:15pm EDT so they're still very popular, and Skippies does a very predictable track rotation, so any given paid track will be used for 3 seasons in a row before being subject to re-selection in the voting process.

They've already selected tracks for the next two seasons (subject to change of course, none of this is official yet but this is what the community representative posted):

code:

Skippies - 21S3
W01 | 15-Jun | Summit Point (Full)
W02 | 22-Jun | Sonoma (Cup Historic)
W03 | 29-Jun | Suzuka (GP)
W04 | 06-Jul | Hockenheim (Short A)
W05 | 13-Jul | Road Atlanta (Short)
W06 | 20-Jul | Tsukuba (2000 Full)
W07 | 27-Jul | New Release A (or Twin Ring Motegi)
W08 | 03-Aug | Mid Ohio (Short)
W09 | 10-Aug | Snetterton (300)
W10 | 17-Aug | Imola
W11 | 24-Aug | Nurburgring GP (Sprint)
W12 | 31-Aug | Long Beach

21S4
W01 | 14-Sep | Lime Rock Park (Classic)
W02 | 21-Sep | Hockenheim (National A)
W03 | 28-Sep | Road America
W04 | 05-Oct | Road Atlanta (Full)
W05 | 12-Oct | New Release B (or Monza)
W06 | 19-Oct | Laguna Seca
W07 | 26-Oct | Snetterton (200)
W08 | 02-Nov | Mid Ohio (Full)
W09 | 09-Nov | Nurburgring GP (Grand Prix)
W10 | 16-Nov | New Release A (or Twin Ring Motegi)
W11 | 23-Nov | COTA (West)
W12 | 30-Nov | Brands Hatch (GP)

Edit: here's a more in depth look at how tracks are rotated and how long the current tracks will be on the schedule to get you the best value. They run a paid track for 3 seasons and then block it out for 4 seasons, as well as running 2 free tracks a season.

So best buys (for Skippies) for the upcoming seasons would be

W07 | 27-Jul | New Release A (or Twin Ring Motegi)
W09 | 10-Aug | Snetterton (300)
W11 | 24-Aug | Nurburgring GP (Sprint)

Unfortunately Snetterton and Nurb GP aren't the most popular tracks in other series. Imola and Suzuka are very popular in pretty much any series, as is Brands GP, but they may not be the best buys if you plan to stick with Skippies for a while.

As far as D-class, the popular series are the "sprint" series (BMW 12.0, Ferrari Challenge, Touring Car Challenge, and USF2000), Production Car Challenge and Skippies.

In C-class, F3 and Indy Pro 2000 are the popular single seaters (I prefer IP2k, more chill community and generally cleaner races), Radicals are free and fun to drive if you want to do prototypes, IMSA Pilot Challenge if GT4 or TCR cars are your thing, and Advanced MX-5 if you liked MX-5s a lot but wanted more track variety and cleaner racing (free car too)

B is dominated by IMSA (LMP2, GTE, GT3 multiclass, probably the most popular road series period) and GT3 Sprint. (Although, I love IndyCar Open, it's more of a specialist series though, being half road half oval, and is pretty sparse outside of a few race sessions)

A is pretty much European Sprint (LMP1, LMP2, GTE), F1 is pretty dead outside of specific sessions.

How I did my first few seasons:
Pick over the official schedule when it's released, check out what series you're eligible for and want to drive, and plot out all the free and common tracks across them and piece together a season Where you can keep yourself busy with only a few purchases as necessary, to get the best bang for your buck.

Or you could go all out and buy a bunch of the most popular tracks and cars and be pretty set as you climb the ladder.

I never said Skips aren't popular, just that they're not the go-to series these days. The track rotation isn't special either, all the popular series have a similar arrangement (and have cars that are less annoying to drive on giant GP circuits that the community keeps insisting on picking for Skips :argh:)

^Sure, unless some jerk picks a layout with Hislop's chicane.

New Release A/B is probably going to be Red Bull Ring and Hungaroring, both of which will see heavy rotation across a lot of series. ...and neither of which will be fun in skips.

One point for skips besides them being fun as hell on the right track is that (I think, production car challenge should be up there too) they're the longest D class races, which should make them better for building SR. In the 12/15 minute sprints it's easier to lose and harder to gain.

Edit: Looking at the next two schedules it seems like they're using short layouts on tracks that have them which would normally be too long, so maybe the community is getting better about that.

Red Bull Ring is small enough to be fun in almost anything, even if it's still going to come down to drafting up the hill. The hairpin at the top of said hill is going to be a new clip superstar though.

It's pretty fun. The thing with Skippies is they're so narrow, they make any track that feels claustrophobic and hard to pass feel much wider and enables some great racing, even on tighter circuits.

While i tend to agree with "GP tracks are too long" with Skippies, they end up being a draft battle, which has its own charm. They do try to mix up the layouts at least, this week hockenheim was the GP layout, next 2 seasons it's much shorter layouts that should suit the Skippy more. Unfortunately some GP tracks (like Spa) are just single layout and you get the same draft race over and over and it can be a little grating.

As I mentioned before, I think WRC 9 is much superior to Dirt Rally. It's not any easier though. I would probably recommend using a keyboard instead of a controller if you don't have a wheel on those games, you can generally make more precise turning and braking inputs when you have two separate buttons to steer instead of one stick. And don't be afraid to set the difficulty slider all the way down. That being said, buy a wheel.

Also, Trackmania Turbo was a pretty fun single player game that's all about time attack and plays well with a controller.

With F1 2019, I do pretty short races, usually under 20 laps depending on the length of each lap, sometimes a 50% race. Maybe it isn't necessary but I always put in at least one pit stop even in 25% races.

Their customer service, in my experience, is quite good. When I was installing my pedals onto my frame I accidentally clipped a wire causing the brake sensor to stop working. After sending them a picture they sent me a replacement sensor/wire and I only had to pay shipping and handling. Thank goodness they actually help you fix the equipment instead of employing planned obsolescence and telling you to buy a whole new thing like some companies do.

Something to keep in mind, the Formula Vee will be released next season as a (presumably) free rookie car. It should be kind of a Jr. Skippy, so that'll be another option without buying content. Another free car, the D class Spec Racer Ford is getting a ground up rebuild as well, updating to a newer real world spec with more power. People generally have a love/hate relationship with the car, as the current iteration has um, unique handling, but its a blast once you get the hang of it and has an excellent community. They usually run 4 free tracks per season.
