I don't see it that way at all. We see two different things clearly.

Normally that would be a sign of art but not in this case.

edit: the Evanses do this dunking on art all the time

I'm judging it on the fact that she's the one who keeps shoving her foot into her mouth (eg "actually I'm the artist") and that Nil is the one who keeps getting the last word in each strip.

I think a big reason it can be hard to figure out exactly how the Luann characters are supposed to be read is that none of the storylines ever resolve, so no one is ever depicted experiencing any type of consequences for anything. Anything resembling a plot is cut off 80% of the way through to go look at some other inane thing, and as a result characters remain static, their unpleasant personalities grating against each other in the exact same ways forever.

Yeah, they think they are writing generally good but interestingly flawed characters

Instead they are just annoying and dumb. But I think in this case they definely intend Bernice to look like a clod

Even if they're also being dumb about art

It is established cannon that Jeremy is a skinny twig. There is no reason for him to be stuck in there.

Also, The Evans 100% put up Luann, Bernice , Luann's brother and his parents are the " heros" of the strip. Every villain in the strips have been (usually*) in the right, and far better people.

*except for Anne Eiffel, but Tiffany and Les are waaay deeper characters than Luann's "shallow kiddie pool of tepid hose water"

Not just in how the characters act, but also in other ways too. I remember a few months back Luann had some assignment to write about something she was really embarrassed about and a bunch of people were going "She's supposed to be in college, why is she getting a childish assignment like that?" I have no idea why the Evanses had them go to college aside from them having an excuse to write out Delta and Rosa.

Haha, holy poo poo, I've never seen this one before. Wonder how many complaints he got for that one?

Now that I think about it he's done another one about the same subject but it was a little more subtle (the dog in the car saying "I'm going to the vet's to get tutored!"). I just remember him talking a lot about how he got a ton of complaints about the "When dogs dream" strip where it looked like the dog was loving the car so I have to
imagine this one got a good amount of complaints too.

Team Evans wanted to have time progress, which meant leaving the high school setting, except they have no idea how to write characters who aren't a)parents, or b)in high school.

quote:

From 1985 to 1999 Luann was vaguely in the eighth grade. According to Evans's blog, Luann was 13 in 1999. This younger era of Luann focused on topics among children in junior high school and within Luann's family at home. Since 1999 Luann has been slowly aging from 15 to 16 years old at perhaps the rate of one Luann month per one reader year, though this opposes what Evans has said on his blog.[3] In the fall of 2013, it was made clear that Luann and her peers were seniors in high school, suggesting that the characters are around 17 years old and preparing for college. In June, 2014, Greg and Karen Evans ran a story arc in which the high school characters attended their graduation. Luann is attending college as of September 3, 2014.[46] On September 28, 2014, Greg Evans and his daughter Karen made an appearance in the strip, wishing Luann a happy 18th birthday.[47]
God help us if they ever decide Luann is graduating from college. Then it won't just be 'a bunch of college students being as timid about asking a boy out :ohdear: as high schoolers are', it'll be grown-rear end adults in their mid/late-20s doing the same. Maybe they'll think about the concept of kissing if marriage is on the table.

We're normal now.
We love your family.

It was in the first few years of the comic. Paige goes to some older kids' party and immediately gets cornered by a true sleaze, who repeatedly tries to get her to do drugs with him. Including cocaine, which we know because at one point Paige is recounting all the ways he's harassed her previously and caps it off with "And now you want me to go in the bathroom and do lines with you." It was a phrase that my 11-year-old brain reading the anthologies just couldn't quite comprehend. I knew I had to be missing some level of context because I knew all those words, yet when put in that order I just could not figure out what it was trying to say, so I'd reread that one panel obsessively as though sheer repetition would unlock the mystery.
