Personally, the thing I find the most interesting about this is the subtext that comes from both Rich and Penny being queer, but Penny still being either unhatched or else in the closet. "You still have a place in their world", says the elder sibling who was basically disowned for being gay, to the younger one who is hiding in the closet because no, she really doesn't.

Considering how image obssessed they seem, I wonder if they're against him being gay directly, but moreso just against him not marrying an important and well connected woman and having two and a half kids and putting on a good public face while just sleeping with men on the side like a reasonable person., because relationships aren't supposed to be about romance but pursuit of power.

Whether that theory's a thing or not, a vampire saying his wife is "no longer with us" also feels like the kind of thing Zack could later reveal has a double meaning.
