The WWII Merchant Marine memorial is one of the bleakest I’ve ever heard of. It’s a sculpture of a few people crowded at the bow of a ship, situated right at the tide line. At low tide, the hand of a person is visible reaching out of the water, and one of the guys on the bow of the ship is reaching for it; it’s just out of reach, and at each high tide that hand goes back underwater. Example of some insanity from a ship/wreck (the John D. Gill) I used to dive off of Wilmington, NC, where the first merchant marine Distinguished Service Medal was earned. quote:For heroism above and beyond the call of duty during enemy attack when he released and launched a life-raft from a sinking and burning ship and maneuvered it through a pool of burning oil to clear water by swimming under water, coming up only to breathe. Although he had incurred severe burns about the face and arms in this action, he then guided four of his shipmates to the raft, and swam to and rescued two others who were injured and unable to help themselves. His extraordinary courage and disregard of his own safety in thus rescuing his shipmates will be an enduring inspiration to seamen of the United States Merchant Marine everywhere. His name was Edwin Cheney, and his ship was (in this order): Torpedoed by a U-boat (cracking open their oil storage and spilling it everywhere) Set on fire (someone threw a life ring into the water, which had a self-igniting flare on it...cue the apocalyptic inferno that would actually sink the ship) Exploded a few times (in addition to the oil, there were a few armed naval guard aboard with a small magazine of 4” shells, iirc) Capsized (spilling a lifeboat full of sailors into the water just ahead of the still-spinning screws) Broken in half as she finally went under the next morning. There are plenty more like him on this page. http://www.usmm.org/heroes.html The wreck site (as it was last I dove it, in 2017) is a total mess. It’s more like a twisted and angry mass of steel that only vaguely resembles the ship it once was, with debris scattered all over the place and nothing with more than 10-15ft of vertical relief off the sea floor. Afloat, the ship was ~540ft long. On the bottom, the wreck site spans somewhere around 800ft, with about 200ft between bow and stern sections. Looking at the entire site, you start getting the feeling that she went down hard.

New Orleans isngreat to visit and I enjoyed the museum overall, but it really shows that it started as the D-Day Museum and then later became the WW II museum. Especially with the hastily added “oh there was a pacific theater too, and I guess Russians may have existed?” vibe later in the museum. But hey, it’s pretty cool, has AC, and is in a cool city! WW1 museum in Kansas City, MO is also great. And is just awesome from an architectural/aesthetic standpoint. And it’s close to a really good art museum. mlmp08 fucked around with this message at 09:38 on May 23, 2021 |

The cspam Doomsday Economics thread is pretty much the trainwreck thread. Also the car trading thread. And the house prices talk thread. Lots of optimism over market blood. Apparently the more serious stock cspam goons have made their own investing thread, because Doomsday thread advice is, "do the opposite of what goons say."

Yeah, as a whole, goons are often wrong. It's crowd mentality and when everyone is screaming for blood, it's easy to fall into the doomer perspective. But the lols in that thread make it worth reading regularly.

I don't know that they timed that, so much as read the already newsmaking because of Gamestop WSB reddit and playing with that info. No one there was calling that in advance, but it was fun to watch, especially when Robinhood and the like were going down, restricting purchases and sales, openly manipulating the market with no real threat of punishment. Wild times, man, wild times.

Trade results tip: buy tax-advantaged diversified, low-cost funds first. Then do that minus tax-advantaged if you can. Let sit for 10-50 years. Don’t poke it. In that 10-50 years you have a lot of time to learn the basics of how/when to withdraw that money. If space communism strikes and your funds go to the greater good, enjoy the space communism! If the world ends suddenly in hellfire, oh well. If the world goes to poo poo generally (yes), it will probably take long enough for your savings to keep you more comfortable during decline. No guarantees for your kids or grandkids if you have any.

Short term speculating for serious profit is 100% doable. It just requires a lot of mental/emotional attributes, work ethic, commitment to riding out an learning curve brutal almost beyond words and other challenges that kind of don't line up with the fatalistic gambling young people are doing. But that's cool, the Fed will get to point to everyone who got annihilated in the market to enact regulations stacking the deck further in favor of hedge funds (the real victims here)
