As somebody who hasn't played a basketball game since I would occasionally rent them in the 16-bit era, I'm kind of excited about it. I doubt I would have ever paid money for one, but I'm curious to see where the genre has gone.

Playing quick games with actual teams against the AI I thought was pretty decent. Varied systems, good graphics, fun to see the players you like who generally look good and accurate, especially the stars. The rest is garbage, I literally could not believe that after creating a myPlayer character you barely play at all and have to watch these painfully bad announcer interludes without skipping them until you've played hundreds of games and gotten your minutes and stats up a bit. Then expect to play another countless amount of hours to get your character up to a decent level, then another to get them up to the top level. The grind in that game is literally insane. There are also pay to win elements if I remember correctly. Overall the most recent Madden was a much better game for me, and that's not a very good game itself.

Does it have an actual tutorial that teaches you how to play? You hand me Military Shooter 67 and I can have the controls figured out in like 30 seconds but sport games operate on dark magic that makes no God damned sense to me

I have bought NBA2K a few times in recent years when it goes down to 90% off after the finals, but each new year is nothing but a glorified roster update and the reviews show it. I only buy it to play with Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, back when basketball was fun. The games are still missing a fair few legends due to licensing issues (Reggie Miller, Barkley, Moses Malone). I don't care about the coupon because I've made up my mind to never actually pay for anything on Epic, but the game does play quite well as a basketball simulator. I would warn people that the game tends to be offence-oriented; scores are high and defence is frustrating.
