During the 1840 elections the Whigs finally saw a chance to govern after 12 years of Jacksonian Democrat rule. The economy shat itself during the Panic of 1837 and the national mood turned sharply against the presidency of Martin Van Buren. They were basically guaranteed a victory no matter who they ran, but who should they run? Adopting the national party convention format based on the one the Anti-Masonic Party had pioneered, they went through a very contentious nominating process. Henry Clay, the most prominent Whig nationally and former presidential candidate, came close to cinching the nomination on the first few ballots but fell short. Instead, war hero William Henry Harrison emerged the winner and would go on to win the general election. If you know anything about Harrison you know that he died pretty much immediately after becoming president, which is a funny story in it's own right. But you might not know much about John Tyler, his vice president. Tyler was a former Democrat who had broken with his party over the Nullification Crisis. By adding him to the ticket the Whigs were hoping to draw more Southern votes to the ticket. The thing is, Tyler was opposed to basically the entire Whig project. Upon assuming the presidency he spent his entire time quarrelling with a Congress that was ostensibly controlled by his own party. He would veto their legislation and they would debate impeaching him. In the end, nothing much of note was accomplished during his term of office. This was the only time during the Whig Party's existence that they controlled by the Presidency and both houses of Congress.
