At first I thought Everett was mad at the style of hat since the depiction of the crowd's hat activity is not immediately or obviously consistent.

Banana Oil! (March 28, 1924)

This here's playing on the advertising campaign of the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western railroad. Their locomotives burned anthracite coal, which (more or less, if you listen to Milt here) burns clean. Trains that used wood or bituminous coal spewed out smoke and cinders and passengers of the time knew not to take a train wearing their Sunday best. The Lackawanna introduced for a mascot Phoebe Snow, a woman who tempted fate and rode the "Road of Anthracite" while wearing a spotless white dress. And the ads all rhymed, of course.

Tom really isn’t very nice. He’s the unacceptable face of devil worship, as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps Reverend Penrose will bring the wind of change to Lottie’s fortunes, because she’s making a terrible hash of this investigation so far.

I’ve not managed to find a reliable manufacturer of alien-head codpieces yet for the shop, but I’m sure we’ll be able to satisfy demand soon enough.
