All the talk about lovely autism stereotypes in the Shane Black Predator, and no one mentioned the movie's reveal that the Predators are here to steal our autism because it's the next stage of human evolution.

Look better than I thought it would as I've never really cared for the eternals. Predator chat: P2 also brought us this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxQmFw565_8

FilthyImp posted:The successor films fail because it's not some unknowable thing anymore, and you count the minutes till It Does The Thing with the disc, or javelin, or takes the mask off, or... And then you make a sequel and even if you're taping on new stuff (queens! throwing discuses! they communicate vocally!) that initial total ignorance can never reemerge. You're dealing with a completely different kind of experience: presenting a known quantity whose initial widespread appeal was greatly based in it being unknown and shocking.

Desperado Bones posted:Yeah, at the end the kid is making eye contact, smiling and laughing and poo poo like that. I think he even hugs a person? I dunno, the movie was dripping in ableism and it was cringy That’s because they reshot the ending so many times I don’t think anyone really gave a poo poo. In the movie his autism isn’t “cured”. One ending they shot had the pod open up and Ripley or Newt was inside. Yes really. There’s photos of this. No one knew what the heck to do because they reshot the entire last act.

FilthyImp posted:Just find a way to adapt the loving AvP arcade game story where cybernetic Arnold and Android Asian assassin Girl pair up with 2 preds for the ultimate hunt that happens to be Weyland-Yutani's fault. The whole of Predator is kind of a slasher complete with Arnold being a very buff final girl! (Yeah, I know, I'm not letting what's her name get in the way of a good and dumb analogy.) Seriously, I don't like that I know that the Predators' race are called 'Yautja.' That feels unnecessary. The first AvP Dark Horse mini series would also have been a good source to adapt. Asian female lead (so we could get ScarJo on board), crazy set pieces like Predators and xenomorphs fighting during a giant stampede of space cattle. It'd be great.

Predator was actually scary to me as a kid. You got some nice gore and A LOT of suspense and atmosphere. What the newer movies lack is this suspense and atmosphere. They're about as scary as a marvel film too

They should cut that opening space ship shot out of every future release and destroy the footage. It fucks up the entire movie.

FilthyImp posted:The writeup I read leaned really, really hard into "Native warrior woman" poo poo so I'm already kind of doubtful. I get your wariness but at the same time, the original always did give of a strong vibe that maybe in an earlier draft Billy was actually the focal character only to be sidelined and killed off screen once Arnie signs on and does his thing. It would have cool if the final act was Dutch getting killed unexpectedly and it’s left to Billy to fight it alone. If this remake is more in tune with that it could be neat. Related, apparently the Second Unit shot all the rebel camp stuff and McTiernan and his team were horrified at it being so unashamedly gently caress Yeah! slaughter porn by Dutch’s team but the shooting conditions were awful and they didn’t wan to do it all over again so it stayed. But the original intention was to have it be far less explodey and actually depict them as the specialist rescue team Dutch indicated they were.

The teaser looks really nice, yeah, it just doesn't give a whole lot of meat to chew on. The laugh line at the end falls totally flat due to complete lack of context. I did see some praise for it on Twitter as a Marvel movie that actually has a wide range of color and doesn't crush its blacks.

Yeah, I've been figuring Harrington is gonna be the way in, as the everyday guy who finds the threat and learns about the Eternals so the audience can too, but that had no hint of that

As long as Zhao had Harrington play to his range, it'll be fine, but he's not the most versatile actor.

It really looks like someone at Marvel's answer to the Snyderverse. Like they heard all the talk about cinematography and gods and symbolism and decided to "do it right". Like weird Avengers reference aside they got an up and coming oscar winning director known for their visual style to make a deep thoughts movie about (actual) gods. Now it's still possible Marvel Studios buffed the edges out and it'll be more of their samey house style but after Marvel beat DC to the inevitable Thanos/Darkseid problem they were probably feeling cocky. I hope I'm right and they really nail every note Snyder attempted in his DC movies just to see how the fans respond.
