Olympic Mathlete posted:Didn't someone invent transparent *aluminium or something? Let's do cool poo poo with it. Transparent aluminum... kinda exists. Its aluminum in the same way that sapphire is aluminum. Elementally it's got aluminum in it (sapphires/rubies are just aluminum oxide, Al2O3), but it doesn't have any of the properties of aluminum alloys like you're thinking. It's just a ceramic.

As Nero Danced posted:A handful of Phase IVs did exist, for about a week before Ford killed them off. They made 4 before stopping the program. Of which, the fates and whereabouts of 3 are known- one is missing. Far as I'm concerned, the Interceptor is where it went- the guts of it anyways. So they said in the movie! ...aaaand, because , I know we all call it "The Interceptor", technically wasn't it a Pursuit Special? AKA BoB (Black-on-Black, for the satin-black on gloss back.)

Not at all, I was phone posting and couldn’t listen, thanks for finding a better example! Soooooo many 1710s got run to destruction (or sunk) in boats and tractor-pullers in the fifties and sixties that most people selling them now will actually want to get to know you before selling you one, to make sure it actually goes in an airplane. Kermit Weeks specifically has a huge hoard of Allison and Packard V-12s and parts, and will totally sell them to anyone that has a project with wings. I totally get it, but it also means the days of stupid-huge-aero-V12-where-it-doesn’t-belong stuff are probably mostly in the past. And that’s sad as well.

Yeah, no, questioning why someone used a word which is frequently a dogwhistle for race isn't a shitpost. I don't think you're wrong to use the word the way you did or to consider your family ethnic, at all, but it's a reach to say that I'm shitposting because I, without knowing that you're (Polish?) or meant the word to refer to your family, questioned it. It's still weird, because it's not like grandmothers who don't meet that definition either don't use doilies, but whatever, language is weird. That Lancia is cool as hell, although when it came up elsewhere (which I cannot for the life of me find), someone pointed out that the original had something approaching too much power, and this is ... nearly double?

I found out the other day that for the scenes where the Pursuit Special turned the blower on, they had a camera set up on to film the Falcon on the back of a tow truck driving down the road, and just started it up. So you get the blower going from stationary to spinning, while the car is clearly moving fast. Really neat bit of creative filming as opposed to having to rig something up in the engine itself.

Yep, that’s correct. Now subsequent replicas have come up with ways to do it like it appears. The one I’ve had the pleasure to work on here in TX has an AC compressor with a clever pulley - one sheave is connected to the clutch, and one able to freewheel as normal. Engage the compressor clutch, and the blower drive is engaged. The compressor itself is empty. This particular replica does have working AC, though, and was upgraded to a five-speed after the original top-loader 4-speed grenaded itself on a road trip. It’s a neat car, set up as a Road Warrior version.

That's a thing that's always bugged me when I see it in movies. If you put a clutch of some sort on it, you can get it to work like that but doesn't that hugely choke off airflow into the engine when it's off? I suppose you could rig some sort of bypass but by that point you're spending a lot of effort on something that doesn't need to be done.

Pretty much. It could work, and Toyota actually did it on the MR2, but it took some extra plumbing. It would be a pain with the big 6-71.

Boaz MacPhereson posted:Neutering yourself out of a supercharger for screen accuracy. Personally, I would run a functional blower, with an intercooler because you have to space it up to look right anyway, and use the Scott as a throttle body for MPFI. There’s a company that makes replicas of the Scott injector that makes them a throttle body EFI as well!

Why has no one slapped a CVT to the front of a blower yet so it can always be spinning at the correct RPM regardless of engine speed?
|
# ? May 27, 2021 19:42 |

Probably because they want the blower to increase power rather than rob it.
