Decided to paint five more of these guys. In total it took 75 minutes, so still about 15 minutes per model. I might have been able to save a minute or two with premixed paints or using the wet palette for the metallics, but I'm satisfied with that.

This is *insane* for 15 mins per model.
I would spend 5+ hours to get work to this level.

Please enlighten us with your method.

Painted up a quick three Valour Korp plasmagunners. These are great because with the workflow I have set they take about 15 minutes per model to get to this point. I bet if I did more than three at a time I could cut that down.

I really, really like those. I think you nailed the color down. What's your process for the blueish coat?

E: Nevermind, saw it on Reddit :)

Especially in the case above where using contrast is smart because of the paint's caracteristic, and not a shortcut for a quick paint job.

Yeah I'd assume that someone painting batches of similar models in an assembly line, time-optimized way has given up the claim to lofty artistry, but hey, it's important to take 5 times as much to paint your mooks when your ideals are at stake.

It's about ethics in miniature speedpainting, you know. :v:

Yeah, as a software engineer I thought it was pretty odd, especially because a big part of my job is literally copy/pasting code from stackoverflow

Yeah, I couldn't help myself and took a look as well. His models are good! I just don't understand this type of gatekeeping. It's completely counterproductive.

Yes but see, he's specifically talking about learning a programming language. Can't copy/paste code from that Indian guy teaching you Rust on YouTube!

I've heard not to spray prime your little guys when it's humid outside, so what is an acceptable humidity? I don't think it's going to be less than 65% or so here for a long time.

On one hand it's valid to want to not use contrast paints... but it is equally valid to want to use them.

It's only painting, why bother getting mad about how others do it. Just enjoy the differences in execution and results.

I've sprayed at 65+% before. Went fine for me. Don't spray too thick and give it time to dry. I usually try to spray when there's a breeze.

Not sure if they're looking for a painter specialising in using contrast paints. Even if they probably should just to try to dispel people misconceptions about them. Even if they're really good at including them for pretty much everything these days, to my slight detriment.

Some people still consider using an airbrush to be cheating, so I fully expect this attitude towards contrasts to stick around forever.

E: if I use contrasts in an airbrush, is that like multiplying two negatives and getting a positive?

I’ve had a number of bad spraycan experiences in the past, so I get a little crazy about weather conditions when I prime.

My personal choice is looking for times when humidity is between 40-60% and temp is above 50 but below 80.

I’m sure boatloads of people have gotten perfect priming jobs outside of these ideal conditions, as I mentioned initially, I’m overly cautious, but following the above has always worked for me since my initial bad experiences.

As for tips, maybe Citadel contrast paints might work well coloring transparent resin? Although they might be too dark.

I was thinking of using that too. I really should have just had a test model to try and see how the different paints look on transparent resin. Maybe I'll print out another table and give it a try, that thing did not come out easily haha.

It's especially funny because using contrast paints that way is almost identical to just using translucent inks, and nobody gets all bent out of shape about those. Learning how to streamline your process and get the result you want in the most efficient way is a skill all on its own - I guarantee anyone complaining about this stuff is using "shortcuts" of some kind too.

no edge highlighting? You cheated not only the model, but yourself. You didn't grow. You didn't improve. You took a shortcut and gained nothing. You experienced a hollow victory. Nothing was risked and nothing was gained. It's sad that you don't know the difference.
