Stories like this were hugely popular, particularly in magazines aimed at teenage girls. Honestly a lot of Viz started as parody and is now one of the few remnants of about 70 years of cliches from UK comics/magazines aimed at kids and teenagers.

I clicked to see a dumb company but their point about cans > bottles for recycling and program to mail used pop bottles back to their respective corporations is pretty alright.
