Top Gear has kept its dedicated thread going for quite a while over in the car forum. Maybe we need to take the Taskmaster thread to ... uh, DIY?

For some strange reason i've decided to rewatch kid's cult TV classic gameshow Knightmare from beginning to end. It's still as good as I remember, but christ some of the early teams were thick. No wonder nobody won in the first series.

You had to love that the first team to beat Knightmare became minor celebrities for a time. I'm not sure you could get away with having a children's gameshow that is that hard nowadays.

In an age where kids shows were running about and jumping into ball pits, sitting around a TV screen and telling a near blind kid where to go must have felt like school. Am surpised the helmet kid didn't take it off every 30 seconds going 'but I cant see the dragon!'. Limmy should do a new version of Knightmare with his Falconhoof character. For adults.

I certainly was one of the latter. Plus before they started filming all teams were given a copy of "The Adventurer's Code" by the production team, basically a list of bullet points of how best to not die. Taking weapons unless specifically told to was a big no-no, and if there's a choice of doors and no indication which way to go, taking the right-most door would be the safest. At least 70% of the teams ignored this advice.

Before late night TV got infested with casino games they would have simple trivia games only. Some prob still do, but when I get to see TV these days its usually still roulette or poker. poo poo that be easily fixed. They were there to make money, from drunks just getting in from the pub and thinking they were smart knowing the capital of France to win £500. And not reading the small print for the avalanche of spam texts you will get for years after.

The closest I can think of is probably Hugo in that there was some kind of a video game narrative about saving Hugo's family and the viewer communicated with Hugo (I think, it's been ages). But instead of a text adventure, it was just primitive two-button minigames.

I think it's hard to deny that Adventure Call would have been an absolute goldmine as a real show, and that we're truly blessed that Limmy had the integrity to give us the hilarious version instead.

My favourite episode of knightmare is still the one with the kids from Yorkshire where they pronounce soap in a pretty old fashioned way and say it loving loads. It's amazing. I remember being a kid and being shocked at people speaking kinda like me on TV, it was great. I do kinda feel like it's the sort of show that wouldn't get made in the modern TV environment because it's too risky and weird which is a real shame. Now that he's a full-time twitch streamer, he could probably do it on his own terms, if he wanted to. I doubt he wants to, as he's perfectly fine playing video games and doing occasional improv, but it could work great as a charity stream one day.

The one memory of fun house that has stuck in my head for years is during the final question at the end. They get asked the question "name three pieces on a chess board" to which one of the kids immediately blurts out "Rook, Knight, Castle". This causes the other kid to just glare at the first knowing that he just lost them the star prize.

I had Jungle Run and Raven growing up which were fun in their own way but it's a shame there wasn't anything with gimmicks as cool as Knightmare. There was also To Me To You which I don't recall anyone ever winning.

The thing about Knightmare was it was FAR too ahead of it's time. It was constantly hampered by technology restraints, you can see by Series 8 they'd done all they could do with it, VR wouldn't be commercially feasible for another good few years. To Me To You was a bizarre programme. It seemed like it would be common sense to give The Chuckle Brothers their own gameshow, but often the rules didn't make any sense and the comedy interactions with contestants was a bit awkward. Now Terror Towers, there's a good programme!

From the stories he's told it really does seem like making TV was slowly killing him. There's one he told about getting the news that he was going to make another series and he had a moment of very brief elation followed by complete dread and anxiety at the thought of having to sit there and come up with it. I think the way he saw it was being successful took the joy away from it.

If we're talking Fun House, did you know that the Funhouse Twins put out an album in Japan? Shampoo were a bigger success in Japan than they were, well, anywhere else and Avex were looking for a similar group. In fact I've just discovered a live video of them doing the their title track on CITV which is weird as the album was Japan only? Anyway: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_-y_miNiQo You can actually buy their album digitally in the UK now https://www.amazon.co.uk/Twin-Thing-ATT/dp/B00L5RQYTS but it's missing 2 Japan exclusive tracks (also you can get the Japanese album for under 100 yen + shipping, huge price difference)
