I'm cribbing off of Robert Evans here, but by the mid-90s it was really obvious that GOP public policies didn't work the way they said they did for the people expected to vote GOP politicians into power. Trickle-down economics doesn't cause working and middle class wages to rise, relaxing of business regulations results in massively increased cases of financial fraud and thousands of people getting killed due to unsafe working conditions, and every war that every GOP President since Nixon initiated either didn't do poo poo for national security or was a horrendous quagmire with massive casualties (sometimes both!). So, the GOP dove head-first into culture war and put economic policies on the back-burner; it doesn't matter whether or not a given GOP politician's platform is good for you or not, what matters is that Democrats are big government socialists who want to dictate how you get to live your life and tell you what you can and can't say, and that the best way to stick it to them is to say the things they say you shouldn't. Owning the libs is all they have left.

Like, look at this poo poo

This is Philadelphia Weekly, a free weekly paper that's cycled through owners and editorial mandates over the years. Currrent ownership thinks it's a good idea for it to be an alt-conservative comedy rag. We've got a DA election coming up, and the incumbent, Larry Krasner, is a staunch progressive who loving hates cops and the prison-industrial complex. Philadelphia's murder rate went up in 2020, because of course it did, because the murder rate anywhere is directly affected by things like economic anxiety and mental health availability rather than, say, how aggressively the DA chooses prosecute murderers, and 2020 has been a hell year that completely upended everyone's lives. Philadelphia Weekly thinks differently, though, and thinks that Krasner being "soft on crime" or whatever is why murder rates spiked. They chose to express this opinion by holding a contest that involves betting on whether or not human beings will get murdered.

The policy position the paper is advancing isn't the point. It isn't even stated; the reader is expected to infer that Krasner's done a lovely job because the murder rate is so high. The point is the sheer audacity of the way they're expressing themselves. It isn't a joke, because it isn't funny. It's just meant to piss off people the paper thinks are too easily offended.

That's the base Trump tapped into. gently caress policy positions, gently caress issues of national security, gently caress economic theories. Full-throated support of whatever infuriates their enemies is all they care about.

No idea who Clay Travis is, but Buck Sexton already had a radio program in the late evenings (9 PM I think here on weeknights) and he has The Buck Sexton Show Podcast, which in his words, gives you "politics, world security, and culture from the perspective of an ex-CIA officer." So yeah, you know he's a bootlicking shithead because he was CIA, dude looks like he can't be any older than his late 20s though so I feel like he probably worked a desk job but uses the "officer" title to make him seem more important than he actually is.

From what I understand this man is a grifter whose company isn't even that good at making pillows. So can someone explain to me how:

A: Someone like this is allowed anywhere near politics

and

B: Why anyone actually listens to him

But then again, if Donald Trump can be elected president I suppose anything's possible.

Mike Lindell was also one of those weird Evangelical "poster children" that they were all obsessed with for a while in the mid-10's. Like, he wasn't really famous, but he had enough recognition in the secular world that they boosted him every chance they got. He's just the one that was able to make it far enough into the Trump years without any major scandal, as opposed to Phil Robertson (a tragic victim of cancel culture) and the Duggar family (whoopsie-daisy!). His "a former drug addict got right with Jesus and is now a billionaire CEO" story is such a feel-good bootstrap pro-capitalism narrative that he was able to appeal to secular chuds too, so now he just kinda has permission to do whatever the gently caress he wants in the MAGA space. It explains why he thought he could just show up to a meeting specifically for GOP governors and they would roll out the red carpet for him without question.

Well, one of the things to keep in mind is that the second coming is supposed to herald the end of the world and the rapture. Which evangelicals think they have first class seats for.

So, in a way, they may be right that Trump being in office could lead to their desired outcome.

Ken Matthews on Rush's show today: the meaning of Memorial Day is being lost, people think it's just about a three day weekend and barbecues and sales at stores but Memorial Day is more than that, we must remember the true meaning of Memorial Day!

Evil people are capable of thoughts and actions we would consider good. I have known, personally, people I would consider evil who I know genuinely loved other human beings in a pure and selfless fashion.
The idea that evil people are at all times evil in all their thoughts and deeds is generally, in my experience, not true.

That said, Trump is one of the rare exceptions. I do not believe he has any friends or loved ones and more to the point I do not believe he is capable of those sentiments. I'm not even sure to what extent he is even aware that other people truly even exist. His narcissism is very nearly solipsistic as it is for many malignant narcissists and I think he may well be a platonic ideal of the whole 'I am the protagonist of reality and everyone else is a literally person-less NPC here to either facilitate me or be overcome' mindset.

Richard Branson met him for the first time in the early 90s when he was Mega-Broke. Within a minute or two of meeting him he starts ranting to Branson about all these people who were refusing to help bail him out, and how he was going to spend the rest of his life destroying them. One of the most enlightening stories about Donnie.
