Oh sorry, I misunderstood. Its a sort of yes. The person I had this conversation with was a bit of a surprise when I saw them share the image. Participation trophies and the like they don't really care about, (they'd probably encourage that specific thing I think as they're usually the first to make a point of asking kids "ok you didn't win, but you had fun playing right?" at events. Good egg there). I think it was a case of they felt personally attacked by the rhetoric of all "olds" have hosed everything and we're mad about it, and they were fed up with it. But yes the majority of people I've seen sharing that image fit the profile you've outlined.

My parents definitely do that, my brother shared a meme that said something about boomers ruining the housing market, and I got a concerned phone call from my mam asking if he was talking about her personally.

I feel like it's like 'white privelage,' where some people are able to accept that they are part of a generation that happened to be born with a massive advantage, and some other people see it as a personal accusation over their personal behaviour.

Just for clarity, as an academic I don't want to go on record as saying that regulatory law is a satisfactory way of achieving environmental justice. You can regulate consumer behaviour, but regulatory law is a poo poo way of policing businesses, because it invariably results in the regulators needing to play nice with the businesses in order for the businesses to co-operate enough for them to be able to do anything, and also lol meaningful sanctions for business aren't real, they'll just either pay the fines out of the big bucket of cash they made breaking the law, or the individuals concerned get a big bonus for making a bunch of money & then retire before anyone notices it was illegal. I've posted about it before but the most effective way of policing businesses for environmental stuff seems to actually be private enforcement via NIMBYs, which is also poo poo for obvious reasons. I used to enjoy environmental law, but I couldn't study it for a living because there are no solutions, only problems.

I wonder if the CLP are having their fundshare from the members in their own areas suspended from HQ too?

Not a single thing I've seen makes me regret leaving the party shortly after GE2019.

Today I had an email from Unite asking for members in the Labour Party to go to more meetings to try to influence policy.
There's not a chance in hell of them being able to do this.

I think I've discussed this in the UKMT before and Jaeluni mentioned having seen the same thing too. Prior to Covid, when Extinction Rebellion were a bigger deal and bringing traffic to a grinding halt in major cities for a few weekends, a long read image rant was being shared on Facebook. The image was a rant directed at today's youth (which given the way it was written, could be anybody under 30). It was a lengthy "In my day!" screed of electric milk floats, placing empty glass milk bottles on your doorstep for collection the following morning, paper bags for groceries, bottle banks outside supermarkets, learning to repair clothes rather than today's culture of disposable cheap clothing etc. All this and more, followed by a stern "You've all got plastic stuff now so stop telling ME I'm destroying the planet and should go green!"
I know exactly the one you're talking about. My mam had a retort to that about how in her day if you couldn't afford good coal you got hit in the shins with bits of slate, because you were sat so close to the open fire because most of the heat went up the chimney, and the windows still managed to ice over at night because the insulation was all poo poo.

We've definitely improved at some things and got worse at others (and still need to fix the loving housing stock in a ton of places).

Borrovan posted:

My dad did energy efficiency stuff at a big commercial dairy for years, the reason they switched from reusable glass milk bottles to plastic ones is because it actually consumes more energy to sterilise the bottles than it does to just make new ones. You can actually kind of rely on capitalists to make the more energy efficient choice when energy is one of their biggest expenses.
There's two ways of dealing with that, either make the energy much cheaper (give every dairy a research reactor so they can gamma ray sterilize the bottles and blast them clean with the surplus hot water imo :science:) or we can find some better way of dealing with all the plastic, because

OwlFancier posted:

A lot of single use plastics are quite efficient if you ignore the externalities and have a lot of inertia behind them, so yeah if you want to go sustainable you have to legislate.

Which is why plastic to oil (to make more plastic) is probably a good investment at the social level at present, despite its problems, because plastics to poor countries (because gently caress you) cannot go on.

Borrovan posted:

Incidentally, the reason we don't sell milk in bags that consumers put into a reusable jug like some countries do is because no fucker buys them. They trialled that for a few years, the Waitrose crowd bought a few but it just wasn't economical to keep the machines running.

I also learned that apart from production areas, the fridges in the canteen - y'know those open ones without doors that shops keep the sandwiches in - used more energy than the entire rest of the site put together.

I'm surprised those fridges are still in use, all the ones here have glass doors on them, presumably to waste less energy. Seems a pretty easy change to make with no real downsides (other than buying new fridges).

That depends on whether or not you would lose money from people having trouble accessing them (also in the sense of making restocking take longer and having to hire more people to do it) and from furious old people screaming about how it's a conspiracy to stop them shopping or something. Enough to offset the electric bill.

I doubt you would.

About 20 years ago Cadburys introduced fridge shelves for keeping their chocolate bars from melting in summer. They lasted maybe a year, either because noone gave a poo poo either way, or else it coincided with Kraft buying them out and replacing all the perishable ingredients with petroleum byproducts

OwlFancier

I think some of the shops I've worked in have shelf kit that is older than I am so "new fridges" is probably an unthinkable luxury.

What self-respecting, letters-to-the-council-writing, red-faced old fart is buying supermarket sandwiches rather than doing them themselves like they did in the Blitz? Do Tesco even do prepackaged corned beef and piccalilli sandwiches?

I don't know if it is different in other parts of the country but up here everything chilled in the supermarket is sold from open fridges.

As is some of the frozen, they have the open trench freezers.

The only shop I have ever been in that has fridges with doors on was a newer build co-op.

But the sandwich fridge is just the same as the other ones, runs off the same giant fridge loop with the big compressor that pisses coolant every couple of weeks.

I'm still trying to decide what the Labour mascot would be.

I think it'd be a whippet (to appeal to the Red Wall ©) with a Butcher's Apron around its neck as a kerchief (to appeal to the racists). Labour would want to make it female to appeal to women, but when that doesn't focus group well the message from central command is to avoid gendering the dog.

Consequentially MPs alternatively refer to it as "he" and "she", resulting in the mail accusing Labour of having a trans pet mascot. The Tories gain three points.
